Seeking all Old Stoics and current Stoics with an interest or passion for mountain sports. The Stowe Alpine Club is looking for anyone of any age and any ability to join us. The Alpine club is in its early stages, but already has quite a few keen past and present stoics looking to join forces and go ski touring, ice climbing, rock climbing, hill walking, cross country skiing, or even expeditions. So far we have members of all abilities and interests. We have a WhatsApp group to keep you up to date with everyone’s movements, successes, and plans.

We will be holding a couple of dinners (London and Edinburgh) where members can meet and exchange stories, make plans, and listen to some interesting mountain professional speakers. We look forward to hearing from you.

OS Golfing Society

The Golfing Society is very active as the Fixture List for 2020 demonstrates. We have matches, meetings and team events at fantastic courses including Sunningdale, Royal St Georges, Deal, Formby, Hunstanton, Brancaster, Aldeburgh, Woodhall Spa, Little Aston and Woking.
Although the team events such as the Halford Hewitt, Grafton Morrish and Cyril Gray require low handicap players, male and female golfers of all standards are very welcome at the meetings and matches.
We are keen to attract younger Old Stoic golfers. All those under 30 qualify for a 50% reduction in the cost of green fees at all meetings and matches.
For the weekend meetings, efforts will also be made to provide free or low cost accommodation.

OS Racing Club

The Old Stoic Racing Club is now in its third season and we have two superb horses to look forward to.

Both horses are in training with Old Stoic trainers - one on the flat with Jonny Portman (Chatham 83) and another over jumps with Alex Hales (Chandos 92).

For as little as £150 per month, you can own a share in both horses and experience the benefits of being a racehorse owner including:

  • Owners badges when the horses race
  • Box hospitality at certain meetings
  • Numerous visits to the trainer’s yards to watch your horses work on the gallops
  • Regular progress emails, photos and videos of your horses
  • An invitation for you and a guest to the annual end of season lunch back at Stowe
  • A percentage share in all prize money generated by both horses

The horses

Mild Illusion is a two-year-old filly by Requinto out of Mirrored Effect in training with Jonny Portman in Lambourn.

Requinto was a talented 5-furlong sprinter earning a rating of 109 and winning a Group 3 at ‘Glorious Goodwood’ and a Group 2 at Doncaster.

Mild Illusion will be ready to run in the second half of June and will be campaigned initially over five furlongs.

Jonathan is well known for his success on the flat having trained Mrs Danvers to win five races in a row during the 2016 flat season earning just shy of £200,000 in prize money interestingly on a lease arrangement with The Turf Club.

Great Pretender filly

The Racing Club will have the added interest of a second filly kindly leased to us by Alex Hales who has trained for the Club since the outset from his yard near Banbury.

This (as yet) unnamed four-year filly old by Great Pretender is currently out at grass and will come back into training in the second half of July. She will be campaigned initially in national hunt flat races before going over hurdles in the second half of the season. She has already been schooled over hurdles and jumps well.

She is a half sister to Millers Bank, also trained by Alex, who has shown smart form in national hunt flat races at the end of last season - finishing runner up twice out of three races.

Share price

25 shares are available in both horses for 12 months, June 2019 - May 2020.
