OSGS Update

20 April 2017

Golf1

With so much going on in the OSGS here is an extra April update to whet your appetite for some of the future fixtures, particularly the Summer Meeting at Aldeburgh. Don't wait to be asked to play just contact the meeting or match manager - all their details are listed below.

Halford Hewitt:
Despite what had looked like a more promising draw the team's first round opponents, Aldenham, proved to be no mugs. An early 6/5 win by Captain Haydn Brooks & Martyn Palmer and a stirring fightback last green point from Charlie Rotheroe & Sean Morris were offset by two losses which meant that Stewart McNair and David Julius needed to battle back from two down with two to play for Stowe to progress. They won the 17th but just missed winning the final hole so the team so the plate competition at Princes beckoned. Team spirit was restored by a 2-1 win over St Bees with the points coming from Haydn & Charlie Consett and Martyn Palmer & Rob Samuel and further boosted by excellent play in a 3-0 win over Greshams with all three pairs including Peter Jarvis and Sean Morris clear winners. In the quarter finals a strong Bedford team got off to a fast start and were well ahead in all three matches with five holes to play. A Stowe recovery came too late to put enough pressure on the opposition.
Haydn Brooks haydnbrooks@gmail.com is now planning to field a strong team to ensure qualification for the Grafton Morrish at North Hants GC on 7th May.

Spring Meeting at Woking: 29 April
Nick Luddington nick.parkers@btconnect.com has a maximum turn out for the meeting and a few reserves. With three under 30s playing there will also be some competition for the Foster Salver. Several new members are playing which is excellent news.

Match v The Templars at Deal: 20 May
David Ewbank ewbank77@btinternet.com still needs another four players to take on Tom Sleater and his team of Templars. Remember a 50% green fee discount is available for any under 30s. This is a fun match on a great links course.

Match v The School at Stowe: 27 May
Captain Nick Luddington has a team of six but if anyone else would like to play I am sure that Andrew Hancox, Stowe Golf Professional, will be able to find some good opposition from the growing number of talented players at the School. It is a 9.30am tee off followed by a picnic on the South Front.

Summer Meeting at Aldeburgh: 1 & 2 July
Attached are full details and an entry form for this great meeting which is superbly organised by Perry Hunt. There is also the opportunity to play in a warm up match against the club on Friday afternoon (30 June). There is plenty for non golfers to do in and around Aldeburgh, a 50% green fee discount for under 30s and Perry and I will help with accommodation options.

If you have not attended this meeting before I strongly recommend it to you. We compete for one of the Society's premier singles trophies, the Buchanan, on Saturday with two foursomes trophies on offer on Sunday.

Please contact Perry perryhunt@keme.co.uk or me if you have any queries about this meeting.

We look forward to seeing you at an OSGS match or meeting over the next two months.
