OSGS February Newsletter

1 March 2024

Response to the 2024 Fixture List (attached) continues to be good with Match and Meeting Managers reporting lots of requests to play.

Below are more details on the early season fixtures in March, April and May.

Apart from some team events - Halford Hewitt, Grafton Morrish & Cyril Gray - do not wait to be asked to play

Just contact the relevant Meeting, Match or Team Manager on the Fixture List or me.

RESULT

Match v The School at Sunningdale - 25 February

The School team were on good form in the run up to the defence of the Micklem Trophy they won in 2023. Despite President Stewart McNair and fellow Sunningdale member, Harry Pearl edging the top match the Stowe team fought back to win matches two and three for a 2-1 victory.

A completely different, and younger, Old Stoic team will take on the School next Tuesday on the Micklem Trophy practice day - see below.

FIXTURES

Match v The School at Woking - 5 March

Match Manager,Jon Horrocks jonh1@me.com has recruited a strong, young team for this informal afternoon match held on the MIcklem Trophy practice day.

Alex Saary, Greg Choyce, Pierse Odell, James Watkins (OSGS debut) and Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan are down to play..

Northern Meeting at Formby - 15/16 March - Room for more players

This meeting is back for the first time since 2019. It is played on the superb Formby courses managed by James Gartside jamesgartside@simplygentle.co.uk  There is Friday afternoon and Saturday morning singles golf and hopefully (subject to refurb completion) accommodation in the good value Formby Dormy House, with snooker an added attraction.

So far the following are down to play: James Gartside, Peter Simmons, Stephen Murray, David Sabberton, Jon Horrocks, Orlando MacDonald- Buchanan, Mark Jenkyn- Jones, Chris Hutber and there is room for plenty more.

I would encourage 'Northern' members to support this meeting and highlight to 'Southerners' that it does not take as long as you think to drive there. There is even a train station at the Club entrance.

The Birkdale Bucket 27/28 March - Woodhall Spa - Two more at least needed

This fixture is held on a great early season course, Woodhall Spa.

Nick Rice is a regular supporter of this fixture and has written an explanation of what it is all about which is attached.

Nick and Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell (under 40s winner in 2023) are already down to play but we need at least two more for the team competition - Uppingham usually have 10+.

The entry form for the event is attached. The OSGS retrospectively pays £100 towards the entry fee for each player with an extra subsidy for those under 30.

Halford Hewitt 11-14 April at Royal St Georges & Deal

Stowe play Winchester at Deal on Thursday 11 April (10.40am). Jean-Michel Hall is well underway with team recruitment and practice sessions are scheduled for Woburn (2nd March), Royal St Georges (23rd March) and Deal (24th March). This might be the best prepared Stowe Hewitt team for many years.

Spring Meeting at Woking - 27 April Space for more players available

An excellent meeting with singles in the morning and foursomes after lunch. Nick Luddington is the Meeting Manager nicholasluddington@hotmail.co.uk and already has 14 players lined up including Henry Frisby (OSGS debut), Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell, Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan, Adam Carling, Peter Simmons, Chris Hutber, John Da Silva, David Ewbank, William Hill, Stewart McNair (President), Brian Marcel, Angus Campbell and James Fortescue

There are up to 20 places available assuming some players only fancy one round and lunch.

Match v The Templars at Deal - 4 May 1 more player needed

David Ewbank Captains the OSGS Team david.ewbank@btinternet.com and Tom Sleater the Templars in this very sociable match on a fantastic links course.

David has recruited Ben Wackett, Roddy Blackburne, James Clark and Charles Empson (OSGS debut) so far, so just one more player needed.

Match v Canford at Sunningdale - 5 May - 4 more players needed

Our President and Sunningdale GC Captain, Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com manages the team for this fixture. He already has James Clark, David Hinds, David Julius, Simon Chilton and Peter Comber down to play but more players are needed.

Graftron Morrish Qualifier at Worplesdon - 19 May

Jean-Michel Hall bluebirdk7@hotmail.com is recruiting 6 low handicap players for 3 scratch foursome pairs. Stowe have qualified for the finals the last two years.

Match v The School at Stowe - 25 May Speech Day - 4 more players needed.

I am Match Manager pjgsimmons@gmail.com for this Speech Day match on the excellent newish Stowe course. Ian Bendell, James Gartside, Chris Hutber and l are already down to play and ideally we need a team of 8.

Summer Meeting at Aldeburgh date correction: Meeting is 29/30 June with match v Aldeburgh on 28 June.

New Membership Coordinator still needed

I am standing down as Membership Coordinator in November 2024

It's time for someone younger with new ideas to take on the role. The 2022 OSGS reorganisation has spread the load across a larger Committee with defined roles.

Attached is the Membership Coordinator role description. If you have queries about the position please contact me.

A comprehensive hand over will be provided.
