OSGS April Newsletter

3 April 2019

Golf1

March has been a busy month, results below, with lots more fixtures in April, May and June for which full details are listed below. Don't wait to be asked to play just contact the Match/Meeting Manager or me.
The OSGS is for all Old Stoic golfers, male and female, of all standards. We are keen for younger Old Stoics to take part and U30 discounts apply at all fixtures.

RESULTS:

8/9 March, Northern Meeting at Formby:
James Gartside as ever organised an excellent meeting with two rounds of golf and a superb dinner in the Formby Clubhouse. On Friday afternoon in windy conditions Paul McSweeney won the David Hadfield Salver with 34 points and then the next day repeated his success on the challengingly tight Formby Ladies course - 34 points the winning score again. Attendees included James Gartside, Giles Ruddock, Stephen Murray, Lorne Williamson, Paul McSweeney, Sean Morris, Hugo Douglass, Mark Jenkyn Jones, Julian Boddy, Charles Consett, Chris Hutber

12 March, Match v The School at Woking: Plus Micklem Trophy update
Pierse Odell, Paul McSweeney, James Nash, Johnny Rowe and Peter Simmons were rained off the course after 12 holes but provided some practice for the School team.
In the Micklem itself Stowe lost 4-1 to a very strong Winchester side with three of the losses on the 18th. In the plate Stowe beat Harrow 4-1 but lost 3-2 to Charterhouse with the deciding match going to extra holes. The team has lots of talent and character which will be very welcome in the OSGS.

16/17 March, Northern Schools Meeting, Birkdale Bucket at Woodhall Spa:
With only two Stowe players there was no avoiding the Wooden Spoon yet again. Thank you to Guy Robinson for taking part in very testing windy conditions on an unrelenting course which now has fewer trees but even more bunkers. Our continued participation in this event needs to be reviewed - all suggestions welcome.

FIXTURES:
11-14 April, Halford Hewitt at Royal St Georges and Deal
Stowe play Eton at Royal St Georges at 12.10pm on Thursday 11 April
Stowe last beat Eton on their way to the Semi Finals of the 2016 Grafton Morrish and are looking for a repeat performance
The team is: Haydn Brooks, Sean Morris, Peter Hale, Peter Jarvis, Rob Samuel, Martyn Palmer, Guy Robinson, Tony Edgerley, David Julius and James Nash.
All support very welcome.

4 May Spring Meeting at Woking - More Under 30s needed
Meeting Manager, Nick Luddington nicholasluddington@hotmail.co.uk, has 16 entries so far but can take more. This meeting features the David Foster Salver for the best Under 30 score so we would welcome some competition to stop Josh Wheeler automatically retaining the trophy! Contact Nick Luddington as soon as possible if you want to play singles and foursomes with an excellent lunch in between (Single round options available). There are prizes for best singles scratch, stableford and foursomes stableford scores in addition to the U30s.
3 May Boodles Dinner: Contact Angus Campbell ajmcampbell@gmail.com if you want to attend the excellent night before the Spring Meeting dinner at Boodles. Angus has  emailed the usual suspects but this event is open to all OSGS members.

11 May Match v Templars at Deal
Contact David Ewbank, OSGS Captain and Match Manager for this event, ewbank77@btinternet.com if you want to play in this entertaining fixture against the Stowe Templars, Captained by Tom Sleater. Only those who can prove legitimate Cricketing skills can play for the Templars - otherwise you play for the OSGS.
Poorly supported in 2018 so lets ensure a full team of 8 for this year

12 May Match v Canford at Sunningdale
Contact Match Manager, Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com particularly if you over 50 and have aspirations to play in the Stowe Cyril Gray team at Worplesdon at the end of June

19 May Grafton Morrish Qualifying at North Hants
Six low handicap players needed to help Stowe qualify for the finals (held in October) having missed out in 2017 and 2018.

25 May Match v The School at Stowe
At least 6 players needed for this match which is being held for the last time on the current course. So if you are not able to make the 'Farewell to the Old Course' event in September this maybe your last chance to play the course before it closes in April 2020. Contact Peter Simmons pjgsimmons@gmail.com

'Farewell to the Old Course' event on Saturday 28 September 2019: More Ladies and Under 30s please
Over 30 entries so far with Chatham (9) and Walpole (8) still leading the way. No entries from Bruce or Lyttleton though. The new Old Stoic Society Chairman, Hannah Durden (Nugent), has also entered and is looking to recruit more Lady Golfers. We want up to 40 to compete for prizes including a House Competition, Ladies and Under 30s Trophies. Tee off from 9.30am followed by lunch at the School. Cost including lunch and prizes will be around £50 with discounts for U30s. Although this event is 6 months away we are keen to plan ahead. An entry form is attached. Contact pjgsimmons@gmail.com if more information needed.
