OLD STOIC GOLFING SOCIETY UPDATE - November 2020

The Society continues to play some of its fixtures and plans ahead for a brighter future in 2021.

We are also delighted to welcome 16 Stoics who left the School in July and have indicated an interest in Old Stoic golf. They have been added to our database and this is their first OSGS Update. We hope that they will be able to get involved in 2021 and the Fixture List for next year will be circulated in early December.

All those under 30 receive at least a 50% discount on Match, Meeting or Team event costs

John Phillips reaches 100:

Lorne Williamson reports that the Oxford & Cambridge Golfing Society website shows that the Old Stoic, John Phillips, reached his 100th birthday on September 19th. He was a stalwart of the Society for many years and played for Stowe in the winning Cyril Gray team in 1992 at the age of 72. Belated Birthday greetings to John.

RESULTS:

Match v The School at Stoke Park - 8th Oct:

Unfortunately this fixture was cancelled as the School team were not able to travel by minibus due to the restrictions.

It could have been moved to the School course but having recently played Stowe Golf Club there it was felt unlikely there would be sufficient uptake.

Autumn Meeting - 24/25th October at Hunstanton:

16 members attended the meeting at Hunstanton and some excellent golf was played in testing conditions. Neil Gray and Nigel Wright won the Lucas Langley Foursomes with a 19th hole victory over John Da Silva and Jim Marshall Andrew. Tim Maynard won the Secretary's Salver for best Scratch score (78) with Jim Marshall Andrew runner up. Tim also won the trophy for fewest putts (26). Jim Marshall Andrew won the Nigel Chittenden Stableford Trophy with a superb 42 points with Ollie Carr second (38). Nigel Wright won the Peter Piper Salver for over 50s Salver (38). Shot of the weekend goes to artist, hockey player and author Mark Flawn Thomas who hit from near the beach huts to 3 metres (Tim Maynard sank the putt needless to say). Mark also donated a South Front artwork for presentation to the retiring Captain, David Ewbank, and two copies of his book, Beyond Kushnapur. William Hill was elected the new Captain at an impromptu AGM. A Secretary's Report for 2020 and the OSGS Accounts for June 2019 to May 2020 are attached.Golf-News-2.pngGolf-Nov-News.png

Match v Haileybury - Sunday 8th Nov at Sunningdale:

Joint Match Managers, Stewart McNair and Peter Comber, had assembled a very strong team of 12 which included Stewart, James Nash, Matt Bazeley, Simon Chilton, Ben Dixey, Ian Bendell, Peter Simmons, Nick Rice, David Ewbank, John Da Silva, Nick Luddington and Mark Flawn Thomas. Unfortunately the prospect of a win and retaining the Sunningdale Trophy was dashed by the latest National Lockdown.
