Old Stoic Golfing Society June 2023 Update

We have another 4 fixtures in June and July and extra players are needed for two of them.

RESULTS

Match v The Templars at Deal 20th May: Won 3.5 to 2.5

David Ewbank Captained the OSGS team of Peter Wood, Ben Wackett, Roddy Blackburne and Freddie Ewbank (Hon OS) to a 3.5 to 2.5 win over  Tom Sleater Templar's team that included Adam Cossins, Lester Smart, Ian Bendell and Sanjay Ranchoddas (Hon OS). Well done OSGS for an excellent win in the Centenary year

Grafton Morrish Qualifying at Worplesdon 21st May: Qualified for the finals

The Society managed to qualify for the finals in October for the second year running. Peter Jarvis & Jean-Michel led the way with 30 points with William Hill & Will Berner (27) and Charlie Rotheroe & Ollie Clarke (26). Although Stowe came 4th out of 10 teams at Worplesdon The Grafton Morrish awarded the final place to Stowe as best non-qualifier. 

Match v Stowe at Stowe 27th May: Lost 2.5 to 1.5

Johnny Rowe, Peter Simmons, Peter Jarvis, James Gartside, Alim Jinnah, Ian Bendell and Will Berner together with Tim Hare (Interim Master in Charge of Golf) lost 2.5 to 1.5 to a School side without its top two players, Ed Davis (+3) and Chanelle Fontaine Geary (+2). Peter Jarvis and Will Berner produced the win with James Gartside and Tim Hare managing a half.

 

 

 

 

 

 

FIXTURES:

Alba Trophy at Woking 3rd June:

Jean-Michel Hall and Max Faulkner will be representing the Society in this prestigious 36 hole scratch foursomes event. We wish them well.

Jean-Michel is a previous winner with Haydn Brooks in 2014.

Midlands Public Schools Meeting at Little Aston 21st June:

Team of at least 6 needed. A lovely course and a sociable day. Contact Peter Simmons pjgsimmons@gmail.com if you would like to play.

OSGS funds 50% of the entry fee. We have not fielded a team in this competition since 2019 and will need to delete it from the fixture list if we cannot compete this year. Little Aston is ideally located for Midland and Northern members.

Cyril Gray at Worplesdon 21-23rd June:

Peter Jarvis jarvis_peter@yahoo.com Captains the team of 3 foursome pairs in this over 50s competition. Guy Robinson, Martyn Palmer, William Hill, Sean Morris, Tim Maynard and Peter make up a strong line up.

Our President Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com will be playing with David Julius in the Senior Cyril Gray (Combined age of 140) - a promising partnership.

Summer Meeting at Aldeburgh 1st/2nd July: More players urgently needed

A great meeting on an iconic course. Peter Wood pscwood@talk21.com is the Meeting Manager and needs more players urgently.

The meeting includes singles on Saturday and foursomes on Sunday morning with an excellent meal on Saturday evening at the Lighthouse in Aldeburgh. There is also a match v Aldeburgh GC (Captained by Perry Hunt) on Friday afternoon (30th June) if you fancy a sociable warm up game.

So far Peter Wood, Ollie Carr, William Hill, Nick Luddington, Jeremy Scowsill, Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan and Peter Simmons are down to play but more are needed to compete for the prestigious Buchanan Scratch Trophy, the Bob Durrant Stableford Salver and The Chatham & Choyce foursomes trophies.

Match v Old Gregorians at New Zealand 2nd September:

Autumn Meeting at Brancaster 14/15th October: Nearly full - 2 places available

Tim Maynard timmaynard@btinternet.com is Meeting Manager. This is a popular meeting with 18 places available. So far Tim Maynard, Jeremy Cave, Peter Simmons, David Ewbank, Orlando McDonald- Buchanan, Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell, Francis Law, Neil Gray, Nigel Wright, Nick & Chris Luddington, Hugo Douglass, Jonathan Bewes, David Hockley and Andrew Swan are down to play so just 2 more places available.

Centenary Competition at Stowe 23rd September:  More players urgently needed

A Shotgun Start competition similar to the 'Farewell to the Old Course' held in 2019. Individual and House team competition with lunch to follow as part of the wider Old Stoic Centenary Day being held on 23rd Sept. Organiser, Peter Simmons pjgsimmons@gmail.com

We can accommodate 40 players and only 9 have registered already. 

We need a minimum of 30 entries by the start of August to make this event viable - entry form attached

With the increasing cost of team event entries and under 30 discounts it is vital that all those who play in OSGS fixtures pay the OSGS annual subscription which is currently £40 per annum
