Old Stoic Golfing Society January 2024 Update

Happy New Year and I hope you had an excellent Festive Season.
As it pours down and blows a gale outside, with most golf courses closed, now is the ideal time to look forward to better weather and OSGS fixtures on some great courses around the country.

Response to sending out the 2024 Fixture List (attached) in December has been excellent with Match and Meeting Managers reporting lots of requests to play.
Below are more details on the early season fixtures in February, March and April.  

Apart from some team events (Halford Hewitt, Grafton Morrish & Cyril Gray) do not wait to be asked to play. 
Just contact the relevant Meeting, Match or Team Manager on the Fixture List or me.

FIXTURES
Match v The School at Sunningdale - 25th February
Jean-Michel Hall bluebirdk7@hotmail.com and Peter Jarvis jarvis_peter@yahoo.com will be recruiting a mix of Sunningdale members and Halford Hewitt prospects to take on the strong School team in a warm up for the Micklem Trophy (Stowe are currently holders) on 6th March.

Match v The School at Woking - 5th March
Jon Horrocks jonh1@me.com is Match Manager for this informal afternoon match held on the MIcklem Trophy practice day.
Alex Saary and Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan are already down to play but three more Old Stoics are needed.

Northern Meeting at Formby - 15/16th March
This meeting is back for the first time since Covid. It is an excellent format on the superb Formby courses managed by James Gartside jamesgartside@simplygentle.co.uk  There is Friday afternoon and Saturday morning singles golf and accommodation in the good value Formby Dormy House, with snooker an added attraction. 
I would encourage the 'Northern' members to support this meeting and highlight to 'Southerners' that it does not take as long as you would think to drive there. There is even a train station at the Club entrance.

The Birkdale Bucket 27/28th March - Woodhall Spa
This fixture is held on a great early season course, Woodhall Spa.
Nick Rice is a regular supporter of this fixture and has written an explanation of what it is all about which is attached.
Nick has already been approached by Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell (under 40s winner in 2023) and Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan and it would be great to have a good turnout - Uppingham usually have 10+ but we need a minimum of 4 to count.
The entry form for the event is attached. The OSGS pays £100 towards the entry fee for each player with an extra subsidy for those under 30

Halford Hewitt 11-14th April at Royal St Georges & Deal
The draw for the Centenary competition takes place on 10th January at a Centenary Dinner being held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Stowe have a table at the dinner which will be attended by Lorne Williamson, Stewart McNair, Greg Choyce, Charlie Rotheroe, Charles Dimpfl, Simon Chilton, David Hinds, Richard Wood and Peter Simmons who have connections to the winning Halford Hewitt teams of 1979 and 1988.

Spring Meeting at Woking - 27th April
An excellent meeting with singles in the morning and foursomes after lunch. Nick Luddington is the esteemed Meeting Manager nicholasluddington@hotmail.co.uk and already has Henry Frisby (OSGS debut), Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell, Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan and Peter Simmons down to play. There are up to 20 places available assuming some players only fancy one round and lunch. 

New Membership Coordinator needed
I am standing down as Membership Coordinator at the end of the 2024 season. 
It's time for someone younger with new ideas to take on the role. The 2022 OSGS reorganisation has spread the load across a larger Committee with defined roles. 
Attached is the Membership Coordinator role description. If you have queries about the position please contact me. 
A comprehensive hand over will be provided.

Reminders
OSGS Subscription - 
With the increasing cost of event entries and under 30 discounts it is vital that all who play in OSGS fixtures pay the annual subscription which is £40 per annum. 
Those who played in 2023 but did not pay a subscription are about to be chased.
To set up a Standing Order, or increase your current one from £25, the bank details are:

- All under 30s receive a 50% discount on the green fee cost of matches, team events and meetings.
