Old Stoic Golfing Society August 2023 Update

We have 6 fixtures between now and the end of the season in November and extra players are needed for four of them.

Full details are below and if you want to play just contact the relevant Match or Meeting Manager.

FIXTURES

Match v Old Merchant Taylors at Moor Park 10th August (3pm tee off): 2 more players needed

Nick Rice njrice01@gmail.com is Match Manager for this mid week afternoon match. Currently Nick, David Hinds, Greg Choyce, Alim Jinnah, Lorne Williamson and Peter Simmons are down to play but 2 more players would be even better. Moor Park is in easy reach of London and has recently hosted the Carris Trophy (England U18 Championship). Please contact Nick if you would like to play.

Match v Old Gregorians at New Zealand 2nd September: 2 more players needed

Ian Bendell ianbendell@hotmail.com is Match Manager for this excellent fixture at an iconic course. Ian has 6 players already but needs 2 more to complete the team. Please contact Ian if you would like to play.

Centenary Golf Competition at Stowe 23rd September:  25th August entry deadline

A Shotgun Start (9.30am) competition similar to the 'Farewell to the Old Course' held in 2019. Individual and House team competitions with lunch to follow as part of the wider Old Stoic Centenary Day being held on 23rd Sept. Organiser, Peter Simmons pjgsimmons@gmail.com

We can accommodate up to 40 players and 17 have registered so far but we really need around 30 entries to make this event viable. 

Chandos, Chatham, Cobham and Walpole have enough players for teams, Grafton and Temple have one player each, but Bruce, Grenville and Lyttleton have no entries at all. 

This competition is open to all Old Stoic Golfers, not just members of the OSGS, so please spread the word to your contemporaries

Grafton Morrish Finals at Hunstanton & Brancaster 6-8th October:

1st Team Captain, Jean-Michel Hall, is recruiting a team of low handicap golfers for this prestigious competition that the Society qualified for at Worplesdon in May. If you feel you should be considered contact Jean-Michel at bluebirdk7@hotmail.com 

Autumn Meeting at Brancaster 14/15th October: Reserve list in operation

Tim Maynard timmaynard@btinternet.com is Meeting Manager. As ever this has proved a popular fixture and 19 are currently down to play. 

Society Captain, Peter Jarvis, Tim Maynard, Jeremy Cave, Peter Simmons, David Ewbank, Orlando McDonald- Buchanan, Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell, Francis Law, Neil Gray, Nigel Wright, Nick & Chris Luddington, Hugo Douglass, Jonathan Bewes, David Hockley, Julian Stocks, John Treadwell and Andrew Swan have registered but Tim has a reserve list as a lot can happen in 2.5 months!

Match v Haileybury at Sunningdale, 5th November: 2 reserves needed

The final fixture of the year is the popular match v Haileybury. Contact is Meeting Manager, Peter Comber peter.comber@parkasset.com

Peter already has a full team of Simon Chilton, Stewart McNair, Nigel Randall, James Clarke, Roddy Blackburne, Ben Wackett, Ben Dixey, Nick Rice, David Ewbank, Mark Flawn Thomas and Arthur Fenwicke Clennell. A couple of reserves would be useful so contact Peter if you are interested.

Halford Hewitt Centenary Dinner 10th January 2024

2024 marks the Halford Hewitt Centenary. As part of the celebrations a special dinner is being held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Wednesday 10th January, during which the draw for the 2024 Centenary competition will take place. Each School is allocated 12 dinner tickets at a subsidised cost of £120 with further tickets available at £160. The entry fee to the HH has been increased in 2023 and 2024 to help fund the celebrations.

Full details of the dinner will be circulated by the organisers in the near future. 

At this stage please contact me, pjgsimmons@gmail.com if you would like to attend the dinner - this will provide an idea of the level of interest. Team members from the winning sides of 1979 and 1988 may be particularly interested. 

I have heard from Greg Choyce and Lorne Williamson so far.

OSGS Subscription - 

With the increasing cost of team event entries and under 30 discounts it is vital that all those who play in OSGS fixtures pay the OSGS annual subscription which is currently £40 per annum.

- All under 30s receive a 50% discount on the green fee cost of matches, team events and meetings.
