Old Stoic Golfers

Old Stoic Golfing Society April 2024 Update

We are now into the busiest period of the year for Old Stoic Golf. Players of all standards are needed fixtures so please look at the details below.

Apart from some team events (Halford Hewitt, Grafton Morrish & Cyril Gray)  do not wait to be asked to play

Just contact the relevant Meeting, Match or Team Manager on the Fixture List (attached) or me.

Update on Charles Dimpfl

Further to my earlier email about Charles Dimpfl's stroke we can happily report that he is recovering very well. Our President, Stewart McNair, visited Charles in Hospital last Thursday and found him up and about, watching the golf and as vocal as ever. He is under a strict regime of physiotherapy and exercise to keep the recovery going.

RESULTS

Match v The School at Woking - 5th March

Although we had a completely different team to play the School at Woking compared with the Sunningdale.match the result was the same with the School team edging it 3-2

Pierse Odell and Johnny Rowe won their matches with James Watkins (OSGS debut), Greg Choyce and Orlando MacDonald-Buchanan battling well..

Micklem Trophy: Stowe lost 2-3 to Wellington in the final with Wellington winning the deciding match with a birdie on the 20th.

Northern Meeting at Formby - 15/16th March

Back for the first time since 2019 a select group of 5 played the superb Formby courses. Winner of the David Hadfield Salver was Stephen Murray while the Formby Tankard was won by Meeting Manager, James Gartside. This an excellent meeting that warrants a better turn out - well done to James, Stephen, Mark Jenkyn Jones, David Sabberton and Chris Hutber for making the trip

Stephen Murray presented with Hadfield Salver by Mark Jenkyn Jones.

The Birkdale Bucket 27/28th March - Woodhall Spa

Yet again Nick Rice and Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell represented Stowe very well. Arthur won the Hinchcliffe Spade for best individual score with 42 points, 3 points ahead of the field. Arthur also retained the prize for best score by an under 40 that he won in 2023..Arthur and Nick's combined scores were also good enough to secure 6th place for Stowe in the team competition which is based on the best 4 scores from each of the 8 teams.

Let's hope we can recruit a minimum of 4 players next year so we can compete properly for the Birkdale Bucket itself.

Spring Meeting at Woking - 27th April Space for more players available

Match v The Templars at Deal - 4th May

David Ewbank Captains the OSGS Team david.ewbank@btinternet.com and Tom Sleater the Templars in this very sociable match on a fantastic links course.

David has recruited Ben Wackett, Roddy Blackburne, James Clark, John Da Silva and Charles Empson (OSGS debut) but I'm sure would welcome a reserve or two.

Match v Canford at Sunningdale - 5th May - 4 more players needed

Our President and Sunningdale GC Captain, Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com manages the team for this fixture. He already has James Clark, David Hinds, David Julius, Simon Chilton and Peter Comber down to play but more players are needed.

Match v The School at Stowe - 25th May Speech Day - 3 more players needed.

I am Match Manager pjgsimmons@gmail.com for this Speech Day match on the excellent newish Stowe course. Ian Bendell, James Gartside, Chris Hutber, Alim Jinnah and l are already down to play and ideally we need at least a team of 8.

Midlands Public School Meeting at Little Aston 4 more players needed

A very enjoyable meeting with 10 other schools on the superb Little Aston course near Birmingham. It's 18 holes foursomes in the morning with the option of 15 more holes after lunch. The OSGS covers part of the entry fee from our Old Stoic Society grant.. Contact me pjgsimmons@gmail.com if you would like to play. Currently Nick Luddington and I are down to play and it would be good to enter a team for the first time since pre Covid.

Summer Meeting 29/30th June at Aldeburgh + match v Aldeburgh 28th June. Room for more players across the weekend

Contact Peter Wood pscwood@talk21.com if you would like to play in this superb meeting in a lovely location. There is a singles round on Saturday afternoon and foursomes on Sunday morning with the option of a warm up round on Friday afternoon in an informal match against Aldeburgh GC, or even on Saturday 9 holes on the tricky Riverside course.

The following are already down to play at some stage over the weekend: Peter Wood, Tom Wood (OSGS debut), Will Berner, Peter Simmons, David Hinds, Jeremy Hinds, Brian Marcel, William Hill, Jeremy Scowsill and Nick Luddington and there is room for plenty more.

Aldeburgh GC provides excellent food and beverages and the local area has the full range of distractions for non golfers.

New Membership Coordinator still needed

I really am standing down as Membership Coordinator in November 2024

It's time for someone younger with new ideas to take on the role. The 2022 OSGS reorganisation has spread the load across a larger Committee with defined roles.

If you have queries about the position please contact me.

A comprehensive hand over will be provided.
