Life before Stowe

I was born in Zimbabwe, and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. I studied up to Masters level in Commerce, before moving to the UK. After six years in industry, I discovered my calling and undertook my Teacher Training Qualification in Milton Keynes back in 2006 and have never looked back. The first ten years of my teaching I was fortunate enough to have worked in a large, urban comprehensive state school in Milton Keynes with families from varying backgrounds and worked my way up to Head of Year. I moved over into the independent sector in 2016, when I was offered a job at a small independent school. After three years I moved to Akeley Wood School and worked as both Head of Business and Economics and Head of Year concurrently. I came to view Stowe after seeing the job advert and was completely won over by the culture, stability, leadership, and surroundings of the School.

What do you enjoy most about your subject?

I love how topical, current, and dynamic my subjects are. Turn on the TV or head to your smart phone and there is a plethora of news and views on the world of business and economics from across the globe. Just fascinating to teach, discuss, and debate – and an abundance of wider reading available.

What do you enjoy most about Stowe?

There is a culture of hard work and family that underpins Stowe and has made my family and I feel immediately welcome. The grounds are impressive, but more importantly, the School knows where it is headed, what is important, and values relationships with staff and pupils. I enjoy teaching Stowe pupils as they are respectful and kind. As a practicing Christian, I also love the faith element of the School.

What is your favourite Lesson?

I do not have a favourite- it is usually the lesson I am currently in! Teaching can be exhausting because you throw yourself into every lesson – but if you are not tired by the end of the day – you are doing it wrong!

What do others say about you?

I don’t hold back – whether this is a good thing or not depends very much on the circumstances, but I am trying to improve this and become more tactful (albeit South African’s are known for their directness – but – when in Rome….). I also feel this is a strength because I give as much as I can (why give any less) to anything I endeavour to do.

Other hats

I am also Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (linked to Nugent, Bruce, and Temple House), and Wellbeing Lead.

Passions

I am passionate about the younger generation and ensuring that they are heard and not misunderstood, hence my role as both DDSL and Wellbeing Lead. I am often asked by outsiders why on earth I would work with teenagers but in fact I couldn’t think of a more fun, energetic, and important way to spend your time! Pupils keep you on your toes, but they are young adults who need guidance and care – and I am passionate about providing them with this.
