Life before Stowe

I studied history at the University of York and went on to specialise in History Education at a Secondary Level at the University of Oxford. I also worked as a Waterstones Bookseller, reflecting my love for reading.

What do you enjoy most about your subject?

The great thing about History, in my eyes, is that there is something for everyone. If you are interested in battles and bombs, economics and politics, music and film; if you like to root for the little guy, or you love Kings and Emperors, you can always find those things in our lessons. Unlike a lot of subjects, in History we can reward any passion and I truly believe that if a child wants to do well and enjoys the subject, we can always make that happen.

What do you enjoy most about Stowe?

What I really love at Stowe is that there is a place for everyone. The grounds are big enough, the people kind enough, the vision wide enough, that every pupil and every member of staff feels encouraged and supported in their journey of growth and development. It is a very special place.

What is your favourite Lesson?

My favourite lessons are the fourth form Cold War lessons. It is a great course, in which everything is on the line, nobody trusts each other, anyone could at any moment decide to spark a conflict that destroys us all, and I think the pupils have really enjoyed that tension.

What do others say about you?

Best not to dwell.

Other hats

Alongside History, I also instruct in the CCF and run the Skiing programme. I am particularly proud of the skiing. It has taken a lot of work between myself and Mr Jones, but we’ve got the programme up and running and have now competed in an international competition, where we won several medals and a cup.

Passions

Outside of school activities, I am a keen lover of the outdoors, and also enjoy creative writing in my free time (but don’t expect to see me on any bookshelves any time soon)!
