About the event

All Old Stoics, Parents and Friends of Stowe with a keen interest in Horse Racing are warmly invited to attend our first Cheltenham Festival Preview on Thursday 27 February 2020, from 6.30pm onwards in the Music Room at Stowe.

Guests have the chance to hear from jockeys and trainers connected some of the leading runners as well as hearing from our current trainers in the Old Stoic Racing Club; Alex Hales (Chandos 92) and Jonathan Portman (Chatham 83). The evening will be hosted by Sky Sports Racing Presenter Robert Cooper (Cobham 68). 

A full panel line up will be revealed soon. 

The evening will begin with drinks in the Marble Hall, followed by a talk in the Music Room.

Jonathan Portman (Chatham 83) is a hands on horseman with worldwide experience and has been training flat and jumping racehorses since 1998. Formerly as an amateur rider he rode winners of flat in France and jump races in England. Since becoming a trainer, he has seen a great number of secesses, including Annecdote, Royal Razalma and 5 time unbeaten two year old filly Mrs Danvers. Jonathan leased Mild Illusion to the Old Stoic Racing Club for the last season, resulting in the Club seeing their best results to date!

Robert Cooper (Cobham68) reports and presents for the specialist horse racing channel, At the Races (Sky 415). He has been a freelance broadcaster and writer since 1995. In 2005, Robert was named Broadcaster of the Year at the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association. Robert is a proud member of the Old Stoic Racing Club.

Alex Hales (Chandos 92) has been involved in racing since leaving Stowe. Key positions held in formative years include being Head Lad to Charlie Mann, Assistant trainer to Kim Bailey and from 2000 – 2003 Alex was private trainer for Andrew Cohen. In July 2003, Alex acquired his dual purpose training licence and since then has achieved much success with both flat and jump horses.Alex was instrumental in the creation of the Old Stoic Racing Club two years ago and has since trained three horses for the Club including Topper Thornton who provided us with a presence in big Saturday races on ITV Racing at Sandown and Warwick. Our latest horse with him is a mare called Bourbon Beauty who be racing in national hunt flat races and over hurdles during the forthcoming national hunt season.
