Cheltenham Festival Preview Night
Thursday 11 March, 7pm
About the event
All Old Stoics, Parents and Friends of Stowe with a keen interest in horse racing are warmly invited to attend our second Cheltenham Festival Preview evening on Thursday 11 March 2021, starting at 7pm.
This will a virtual event hosted by Sky Sports Racing Presenter Robert Cooper (Cobham 68).
Guests will have the chance to hear from the panel about their views on the Festival, we will preview some of the main races (including Champion Hurdle, Champion Chase, Stayers Hurdle and the Gold Cup) and to reflect on the ongoing success of our two Old Stoic Racing Clubs.
Our panel includes:
Harry Bannister (Chatham 12) – Harry has ridden at all the top festivals with big race winners including Bigmartre and La Bague Au Roi. He has formed a formidable partnership with the trail blazing For Pleasure (trained by Alex Hales) who has entries at this year’s Festival and he has also secured a much celebrated win for our Racing Club with Bourbon Beauty at Kelso in early December.
David Bass - David is currently undergoing one of his most successful seasons with 52 winners at the time of writing. He is primarily associated with Kim Bailey’s yard just outside Cheltenham and has ridden three Cheltenham Festival winners so far. He is well known for his attacking front running style and has some fascinating mounts at this year’s Festival including FIRST FLOW (Champion Chase) and VINNDICATION (Stayers Hurdle or Gold Cup).
Simon Clare - Simon has worked in bookmaking for over twenty years and is currently PR Director of the Gala Coral Group. Simon has ridden in numerous charity races and is never afraid to give you a price on a horse! He will be giving us some valuable insight into the Festival markets and highlighting which horses are attracting support.
Alex Hales (Chandos 92) – Alex has sent out over 200 winners and is responsible for training Bourbon Beauty who runs in the colours of the Old Stoic Racing Club. He trains just fifteen miles from Stowe near Banbury and will be having runners at the Festival.
Jonathan Portman (Chatham 83) – Better known as a flat trainer from his Lambourn base, Jonny gave the Old Stoic Racing Club success at the highest level when Mild Illusion proved victorious in the Listed ‘Bosra Sham’ at Newmarket back in 2019. We have two new flat horses for the 2021 season, which you will have chance to hear about along with Jonny’s predictions for the Festival.
