Opera della Luna presents Das Spitzentuch der Königin
The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief by Johann Strauss II

Opera della Luna presents the first professional UK production of this major work by Johann Strauss, packed to the brim with familiar tunes.

Das Spitzentuch der Konigin was first presented in Vienna in 1880. It was a great success and it soon chalked up over 100 performances in Vienna alone. In 1886 a new English language version entitled The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief opened the new Casino Theatre in New York, where it was similarly a huge hit, running for 130 performances before touring the United States for two years. Surprisingly the show was never presented on the London stage. It may be because Gilbert & Sullivan were at the height of their success at this time, but also perhaps because the plot includes adultery within a Royal Family the show failed to reach London. Yet many of the tunes are well-known to us, as Strauss later re-used them in his famous orchestral waltzes. “Roses of the South” is just one of the many well-loved melodies contained within the show’s sparkling score.

Opera della Luna returns to Stowe for one night only with a special preview performance of this new production prior to London performances at Wilton’s Music Hall.
