Opera della Luna presents La Belle Helene

Sunday 26 January, 3pm

About the event

Venue: Roxburgh Theatre

La belle Hélène
By Jacques Offenbach
New English version by Jeff Clarke
Following the huge success of Orpheus in the Underworld this year, Opera della Luna return to Stowe for one night only with another Offenbachian extravaganza: the outrageous La belle Hélène. Helen of Troy – the face that launched a thousand ships and the most beautiful
woman in the world. No wonder a lusty young stud like Paris, son of King Priam, is  determined to carry her off, - even if by doing so he starts the Trojan War. Offenbach’s irreverent burlesque of the classical legend caused a scandal when it first appeared. Not only did it poke fun at classical antiquity, it savaged  contemporary society, the Government
and the Church. Opera della Luna’s new version for the 21st century is equally irreverent and merciless in this sizzling new translation.
