Scientific vs. Religious Knowledge with Prof. Tom Simpson (University of Oxford)

Science and religion both claim to give us knowledge of the world. But while scientists are encouraged to be sceptical of their own beliefs, we are typically encouraged to accept religious teachings both without proof but with confidence. Similarly, religious associations tend not to welcome disagreement over the central claims of their faith, whereas scientific institutions welcome it. At this event, Prof. Simpson will explore the reasons for this difference, and will argue that religious beliefs taken on trust can provide an alternative source of knowledge.
