Job Overview 

We are seeking to appoint an energetic and enthusiastic Graduate Musician in Residence at Swanbourne House School, to assist the Director of Music (Deputy Head) in promoting an enthusiasm for, and excellence in, music throughout the school. The successful candidate should be willing to embrace all aspects of prep school life. He or she will assist with the learning in, and administration of a dynamic and successful music department. With school accommodation available within the village of Swanbourne, the successful candidate will also assist in the boarding with evening activities and boarding routines and be an integral part of the boarding house team providing pastoral support and guidance in a caring, family setting. The successful candidate will have a good Honours degree, preferably in Music, and be able to play the piano to at least Grade 8 standard to assist in the many accompanying requirements of Swanbourne’s busy music department.

Purpose of the job:

To provide support to the Music Department to ensure the smooth running of the department and lessons.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities 

  • Work alongside the Director of Music / Deputy Head
  • Provide support and teach class music lessons, including assessment and reporting as appropriate
  • Accompany choirs, ensembles, soloists as required by the DOM
  • Playing in assemblies, concerts, plays and services
  • Lead and support instrumental and vocal ensembles
  • Provide expertise and support in Music Technology
  • Assisting in Administrative work as required by the DOM including timetabling of instrumental lessons and liaising with Peripatetic staff
  • Opportunities for composing and arranging
  • Accompany and support children on Music trips

Personal Profile

In the role you must be able to demonstrate:

  • Ability to play piano to a good standard; ability to sight-read or play another instrument would be an advantage
  • Leadership and conducting skills
  • Interest and some proficiency in Music Technology
  • Versatile and willing person who is good at interacting with parents and children
  • Has a love of music and good sense of humour
  • Flexibility and adaptability
  • Well-organised and presentable
  • Willingness to contribute to Swanbourne's community
