Job Overview

Stowe is looking to recruit a keen French Language Assistant who has a Bachelors Degree in French or is a French Native speaker, with a high level of written and spoken English.  The role as French Language Assistant runs from September 2023 to the end of term in July 2024.
Our Language Assistants help our A-Level Students to prepare for their spoken examinations on a one-to-one basis and they assist teachers in the department with lower school lessons.  The Assistants’ timetable is approximately 15 lessons of 50 minutes each and all members of the School are expected to contribute to the boarding community. 
The salary is currently around £10,405 pa, plus full board and lodging on site and use of the School facilities.  Settled or pre settled status is required or legal entitlement to work in the UK.

Purpose of the job:

To provide support and assistance to the Modern Foreign Languages department in both teaching pupils and offering preparation for summer exams. 

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • To provide individual teaching to pupils along with assistance within the Lower School lessons. 

  • To assist with the Summer Term exams. 

Key Tasks

  • To teach 22-24 periods to both individual students and teaching assistant in some Lower School lessons. 

  • To conduct invigilation of speaking exams in the Summer Term. 

  • To assist pupils in the warm-up room for speaking exams in the Summer Term which are often outside timetabled teaching periods. 

  • To provide cover for 6th Form lessons in staff absence. 

  • To conduct and mark 3rd & 4th Form Speaking exams (Michaelmas and Summer Term). 

  • To provide two afternoon language activities. 

  • To help at one weekly language clinic. 

  • To provide pre-exam oral practice in the Summer Term after classes (5:45-10pm). 

  • To attend Languages Society Meetings, three per term (5:45-6:45 or 8:30-9:30). 

  • To deliver talks and offer translation/interpretation for Languages Society, three per year. 

  • To ensure adherence to statutory Health and Safety and Data Protection Legislation at all times.
