Leaving a gift in your will is a powerful and personal way to support a cause close to your heart. It creates a lasting legacy that honours your values and reflects what matters most to you. Your gift can help shape the future for generations to come, making a meaningful difference well beyond your lifetime. Additionally, gifts to registered charities are exempt from inheritance tax, which can reduce the overall tax burden on your estate – potentially benefiting both your loved ones and the causes you care about.

There are several types of legacy gifts:

Residuary legacy: A specific share of an estate is left to Stowe, usually by stating a percentage or a fraction of the whole.

Pecuniary legacy: A specific sum of money – or other asset – is left to Stowe.

Specific legacy: A particular item, such as property, shares, or valuables.

Reversionary legacy: A gift that passes to Stowe after the death of another beneficiary.

The Roxburgh Society recognises and thanks those who have pledged to leave a gift to Stowe in their will. Members are invited to special events and kept informed about the impact of legacy giving. It’s our way of expressing deep gratitude for your future support.

In the UK, under current legislation, gifts to registered charities are exempt from inheritance tax. Additionally, if you leave 10% or more of your net estate to charity, the inheritance tax rate on the rest of your estate may be reduced from 40% to 36%. We recommend speaking with a solicitor or financial advisor for personalised advice.

That choice is entirely yours. Some supporters prefer to leave their gift unrestricted, giving us the flexibility to use it where the need is greatest. Others choose to support a specific area that resonates with them – such as providing bursaries to open the doors of a Stowe education to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity; enhancing our world-class facilities to ensure Stowe remains at the forefront of education; or preserving the heritage and beauty of our historic site for future generations. We’re always happy to discuss options with you to ensure your wishes are honoured.
