Sweet success for Old Stoics at Goodwood
The Old Stoic Racing Club continues to go from strength with Sweet Reward, one of their two flat horses, scoring decisively at Goodwood last week.
Sweet Reward has run almost as many times as two horses do in a season as last week was his ninth start and staggeringly his third success having won twice at Sandown earlier in the season.
New jockey Hector Crouch kept it simple with the four-year-old being positioned just behind the leaders until the 2 furlong pole and, despite a strong challenge from the eventual second, Sweet Reward stayed on “stoically” (in the words of the racecourse commentator!) to record a hugely popular victory in the Jackson-Stops Handicap Stakes for the members of the OS Racing Club and their trainer Jonny Portman (Chatham 83).

The Racing Club is managed by Henry Kimbell (Chandos 04) who enthused,
“2021 just gets better and better for us, I am pleased to say. Three wins from one horse in a season is almost unheard of plus he was second at the Glorious Goodwood Festival back in July.
A very hardy horse – Stoic absolutely! I am delighted for everyone involved as it’s a whole team effort. This is our fourth win of 2021 which also included a Grade 2 win on ITV back in March with Bourbon Beauty.”
Trainer Jonny Portman reflected. “Goodwood was a very pleasing result. Sweet Reward has been brilliant for the Club and everyone involved – I am just delighted.
The Racing Club keeps many of us old boys and girls in touch with Stowe and Stowe connected to racing. Onwards and upwards!”
The Racing Club continue to raise funds to support the School’s Change 100 campaign - making it possible for deserving and talented children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who would otherwise be unable to enjoy the life changing benefits of a Stowe education.
To date £20,000 has been raised through contributions from Club members and 15% of any prize money earned is also donated. This is something they are delighted to support.
Finally, would you like to be an owner in a future Stowe Racing Club? Henry Kimbell is working alongside the Old Stoic Society with plans a foot to launch a new Racing Club for Stowe in celebration of the school’s upcoming centenary in 2023. This will be launched next summer, and we would be delighted to hear from any Old Stoics and current or former parents and staff who might be tempted to take a share.
The perfect idea with Christmas fast approaching….!
