Sandbanks Lunch and Boat Trip

30 May 2019

Old Stoics living in the South West of England were kindly invited for a day at Sandbanks on Thursday 30 May. Everyone jumped at the chance to visit the infamous coastal spot, with tickets selling out in under 24 hours!

Our regional representative, Andrew Thomson (Temple 65) kindly arranged with his wife, Mulu, to hold the gathering at her family’s boat yard, which was purchased by her grandfather over 100 years ago. It is now owned in a trust for the use of his descendants, so we were very lucky indeed to be able to spend the day there. We were kindly allowed the use of their new Pavilion, which looks out over the Poole Harbour.

Thirty Old Stoics and guests attended, including the Headmaster, Dr Anthony Wallersteiner. Andrew and Mulu kindly laid on boat trips around Poole Harbour for our guests, kindly crewed by members of Mulu’s family. The weather put on such a good show; it was the perfect day to take to the water. Andrew arranged the use of a traditional wooden launch named Isobel. Isobel was a launch for one of Mulu’s grandfather’s clipper yachts in the 1920s.

After a perfect morning of boat trips, cups of tea and jolly conversations, we all took a short stroll to Rick Stein, for a delicious three course lunch. During the afternoon, guests were offered the chance to play tennis or enjoy more boat trips and afternoon tea. Many guests brought along their classic cars for the day in Sandbanks, including Michael Waller (Cobham 64), who arrived in his Bristol Tear Drop Special – it was admired by many and Anthony Wallersteiner was spotted sitting in the driving seat, delighting in the interiors.

Our guests were treated to a marvellous day out at the coast by our gracious hosts, Andrew and Mulu. I would like to pass on my heart felt thanks to them for making us feel so welcome and laying on such wonderful hospitality. A number of Old Stoics were on the waiting list for this event and did not get tickets to join us, so we hope to be able to hold a second gathering in the future, if we are lucky enough to be welcomed once again.

This event forms part of our regional event programme, which is flourishing. If you would like to hold an event in your region, please do email oldstoic@stowe.co.uk to be put in touch with your local OS Representative.
