Results on the rise at Stowe

24 August 2017

Speech-Day-2017

This summer's public examination results have once again been something to celebrate at Stowe. Last week we received an excellent set of A level results, with 71% of all grades at A*/B and a third achieving either an A* or A. This is an 8% rise in the A*/B percentage from last year and represents the best set of A Level results since 2012 and the second best set of results since the turn of the century. This is an especially impressive achievement given that these are the first results with the mixed economy of the old modular exams and the new, tougher ‘Govean’ reformed linear exams.

Many students have achieved very strong results and have met or exceeded their predictions. 21 pupils achieved at least three A grades, two with a full house of three A*s and another nine achieving either A*A*A, A*AAA or A*AA. All of these results are a testament to the dedication and hard work by pupils and staff alike who are to be congratulated on their achievements.

Many departments achieved more than 80% A*/B grades, including Art, Computer Science, Design & Technology, Drama, Further Maths, History, Latin, Russian and Spanish. Economics results have also been strong, with five pupils achieving A* and 21 out of the cohort of 46 achieving an A or A*.

University destinations are now being confirmed, and destinations include Oxford, Edinburgh, Durham, LSE, Exeter, Bristol, Warwick, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham, Leeds, Queen’s Belfast, KCL and UCL. We wish our leavers every success as they embark on this exciting step in their further education.

Today Stoics are celebrating another excellent set of GCSE results. Just under half the grades awarded were either at A* or A and all pupils achieving at least five grades at A*-C. There were some outstanding individual performances, with ten students notching eight A*s or more and 21 more students who scored at least eight grades at either A* or A.

Several departments will be celebrating a bumper crop of top grades, with Art, Greek, Latin, Music, Philosophy & Religion, Chinese and Russian all seeing over 70% of grades at A* or A. Those departments which saw over a quarter of their pupils achieve the very top A* grade include Latin, Greek, History, Philosophy & Religion, Chemistry, Physics, Art, Graphic Design, Chinese, Russian, Spanish, French and German.

These grades reflect a great deal of hard work and our pupils have given themselves a strong platform for the new, reformed A levels and they deserve to be warmly congratulated!
