OSGS November Update

7 November 2017

Formby-2015-Winner-web_2

This Update brings a successful year to a close in which 70 different Old Stoics played for the Society in 11 matches, 6 team events and 4 meetings. Many thanks to everyone who has played this year - you have made things much easier for team managers, meeting managers and me.

The Fixture List for 2018 is nearly complete and will include both a new team event at Little Aston and a new match between Young Old Stoics and 'Older' Old Stoics, venue to be confirmed.

Dick Watson Trophy at Aldeburgh, 7- 8 Oct:
Stowe achieved its best result so far in coming third at the Dick Watson Trophy at Aldeburgh.
Stowe started strongly with two great Stableford foursomes scores on Saturday morning to place them second of fifteen teams. In the afternoon two good scores were not quite enough to reach the final, missing out on second place to Bradfield by just one point.
On Sunday Stowe played for third/fourth place against Uppingham, previous winners. Both Stowe pairs were two holes down at the turn but fought back with William Hill and Nigel Wright winning one up and Jeremy Scowsill and Ian Bendell two up against a scratch and +2 handicap pair.

Team Captain Jeremy Scowsill led from the front with 38 points playing with Nigel Wright on Saturday morning and 37.5 points playing with William Hill in the afternoon making him the highest scorer from all the teams.
Since they first entered this competition in 2015 Stowe have come 8th, 5th and now 3rd - so the pressure is on to go one step further in 2018 and qualify for the final.

Autumn Meeting at Brancaster, 21- 22 Oct:
Charlie Consett & Angus Campbell stopped a third win in a row by Chris & Nick Luddington in the final of the Lucas Langley Salvers. Charlie Consett also won the scratch and putting trophies while David Ewbank won the over 50s Piper Salver and debutant, Adam Carling the Nigel Chittenden Trophy for best Stableford score. However the real winner over the weekend was the wind gusting at over 40mph. The OSGS AGM was held on the Saturday evening before an excellent dinner at Briarsfield. The Captain, Nick Luddington, and Secretary reported on the year and accounts were submitted. David Ewbank was elected Vice Captain and Roddy Blackburne voted onto the Committee to help recruit more under 30s to the Society.

Match v Haileybury at Sunningdale, 5 Nov:
Old Stoic golf finished the season on a high with a 4-3 win over Haileybury at Sunningdale - our first win in this fixture for 6 years. Well done Peter Comber for getting 14 players to turn up. The winning pairs were Haydn Brooks & Greg Choyce, Sean Morris & Peter Hale (round in level par), Matteo Di Carlofelice & Peter Simmons (an impressive debut for the OSGS by young Matteo) and Johnny Rowe and Ben Dixey.

Please pass this update onto any Old Stoics, male or female, that you think would be interested in getting involved in the OSGS. The 2018 Fixture List will be with you in early December and I hope that I will see even more Old Stoics playing for the Society in the next year.
