Below are reports on a very busy month for the Old Stoic Golfing Society.

Success at Grafton Morrish and Dick Watson Trophy, 7-9 October
Not only did we field two teams in different competitions on the same weekend but they both achieved the Society's best performances for many years.
The First Team led by Haydn Brooks reached the semi-finals of the Grafton Morrish for the first time since 1994 with wins against Culford (2-1), Harrow (2-1), Eton (2.5-0.5) and Clifton (2.5-0.5) before falling to the eventual winners, Birkenhead. Haydn Brooks and his partner, Peter Hale, led from the front while Charlie Rotheroe, Sean Morris, David Johnstone and Charlie Gartside all came in with several crucial wins. Confidence grew after a very tight first round match against Culford at Brancaster in which both Stowe points came on the 18th and Saturday saw two good wins at Hunstanton.

The Second Team led by Jeremy Scowsill came fifth of 15 teams competing in the Dick Watson Trophy at Aldeburgh. The highlights of the weekend were Ian Bendell and Jeremy Scowsill getting the best score on Saturday morning and the team beating last year's winners, Uppingham, in the fifth/sixth place play-off. The other team members were William Hill and Nigel Wright who played a major part in the team's success.

Autumn Meeting at Hunstanton on 15/16 October
16 golfers attended the Autumn Meeting held at Hunstanton in lovely weather.
In the weekend competitions Nick & Chris Luddington's experience told against the youngsters, Matt Bazeley and Hamish Edwards in the finals of the Lucas Langley Foursomes. However relative youth prevailed in the singles with Matt Bazeley's 73 edging out Neil Gray in the Autumn Meeting scratch and Nigel Chittenden handicap competitions although Neil won the Piper Salver for those over 50. Tim Maynard won the St Andrews Putter with a miserly 26 putts with Nigel Wright a close second.
The AGM saw Nick Luddington succeed his younger brother, Chris, as Captain of the Society. The Secretary, Peter Simmons, reported on the Society’s growth in the last year and the exciting plans for golf at Stowe following the appointment of Andrew Hancox as Professional for the Stowe Golf Club and the School.
