OLD STOIC GOLFING SOCIETY UPDATE - MARCH 2020

The Society's new season started on Sunday with an excellent match at Sunningdale.

We now have 8 more fixtures in March, April and May and players are needed for most of them. 

Full details of these fixtures are below together with contact information for the relevant Meeting and Match Managers. 

So if you want to play just email or call them and contact me if you have any queries.

Remember: All those under 30 are entitled to a 50% discount on green fee costs and help with accommodation where appropriate.

Result:

Sunday 1st March - Match v The School at Sunningdale:

The Society managed a good draw in the match against a strong School team. Stewart McNair and James Scott (School Capt. 2015) managed a good win against Golf Scholars, Max Faulkner and Tom Youds (Capt.), Martyn Palmer and Jack Scott came from dormie 2 down to get an half against Tom Riley and Elliott Strickland (2019 Stowe Putter Winner) while Adam Carling and I somehow extended the match to only lose on the 17th against two excellent 14 year olds, Miles Dickinson and Axel Daly. 

Many thanks to Peter Comber for organising the match for us and the School.

Fixtures:

- Tuesday 10th March - Match v The School at Woking:

Alex Saary, James Nash, Pierse Odell, Guy Robinson and Greg Choyce will be taking on the School team again on the practice day for the Micklem Trophy

- Saturday/Sunday 14/15th March - Birkdale Bucket at Woodhall Spa:

Stowe competes with seven other 'Northern' Schools (Uppingham, Oundle, Wrekin, Sedbergh, Pocklington, Giggleswick and Worksop) on a fantastic course. Singles on Saturday and foursomes on Sunday with a practice round available on Friday. Currently Stowe will not be represented this year. I have been told that we will not 'win' the Wooden Spoon even if a couple of players do enter at this late stage. Full details and entry form attached. The Society pays the green fee cost (£100) of all entrants. Please notify me pjgsimmons@gmail.com if you enter so I know who to refund.

- Friday/Saturday 20/21st March - Northern Meeting at Formby:

A great value sociable meeting on terrific courses organised by James Gartside jamesgartside@macdonaldandtaylor.com - 13 entries so far which includes Sean Morris, Hugo Douglass, Julian Boddy, Hugh Thomas, Justin Phillips, James Gartside, Charlie Consett, Chris Hutber, Mark Jenkyn-Jones, Stephen Murray and Peter Simmons. A good dinner and some competitive snooker all part of the package. There is still room for at least another 6 players of any standard and era. - The Halford Hewitt - 2-5th April at Royal St Georges and Deal. 

Stowe have been drawn to play Uppingham at Deal at 12.25pm on 2nd April. Team includes: Haydn Brooks, Sean Morris, Peter Jarvis, Martyn Palmer, Guy Robinson, Matt Bazeley(tbc), Charlie Consett, James Scott (debut), Hugo Douglass (debut) - reserves being finalised! Join our new President, Perry Hunt, in supporting the team.

- The Spring Meeting - Saturday 2nd May at Woking:

Meeting Manager, Nick Luddington nicholasluddington@hotmail.co.uk already has 16 entrants but can take up to 22. Singles in the morning and foursomes after an excellent lunch at this popular event. We are particularly keen for more Under 30s to join James Scott and Tom Young to compete for the Foster Salver. Contact Nick as soon as possible if you want to play.

- Match v Canford - Sunday 10th May at Sunningdale:

A chance for Stewart McNair to cast his eye over Cyril Gray (over 50) prospects. Contact Stewart at md@mcnairpartnership.com Tel: 07703 228257 if you would like to play. Team of 10 needed.

- Match v Stowe Templars - Saturday 16th May at Deal:

A very sociable match against our Cricketing rivals organised by Tom Sleater. If you want to play for the OSGS team contact David Ewbank david.ewbank@btinternet.com

- Match v The School - Saturday 23rd May at Stowe: First Match on the New Course

The School are keen that we field a large team for this first opportunity for the OSGS to play on the new course adjacent to the Bourbon Fields.

- Grafton Morrish Qualification round - Sunday 31st May at North Hants:
