Old Stoic Golfing Society Update - March 2018
Despite the dreadful weather our season is under way and below are the latest results and details of the golfing opportunities available over the next few months.
Our Society is for players of all handicaps, male and female, and if you have any queries about fixtures do not hesitate to contact me.
Remember all under 30s receive a 50% discount on the green fee costs.

RESULTS:
4 March: Match v The School at Sunningdale
Unfortunately the snow cancelled this fixture. A real shame as Haydn Brooks had recruited several debutants to play and Peter Comber had negotiated a great golf and lunch package.

9-10 March: Northern Meeting & Old Stoic Dinner at Birkdale & Formby
Those that dropped out of this meeting missed playing on three courses in good condition. With thick snow a couple of miles away we were lucky to play at Royal Birkdale on Thursday as guests of James Woods (Rossall) and Peter Marsh (Uppingham). Haydn Brooks, Sean Morris, Rob Samuel and Charlie Gartside got some Hewitt practice and Hugo Douglass and I made up the numbers. Although closed on Thursday Formby was in great shape by Friday afternoon and Sean Morris retained the David Hadfield Salver with an excellent 35 points with Charlie Gartside runner up. Following a superb dinner in the Clubhouse those that remained took on the heathery Formby Ladies course with Mark Jenkyn Jones a very popular winner of the Northern Meeting Tankard with 39 points and Sean Morris in second place.

Many thanks to James Gartside (in photo above with Sean Morris) for organising such a great meeting.

13 March: Match v The School at Woking
The School team had a real boost to its confidence ahead of the Micklem Trophy with a 4-1 win despite giving the Old Stoics shots in all matches. Suitably boosted the School went on to beat Rugby 5-0 in the first round of the Micklem yesterday and are playing Charterhouse as I write this report.

FIXTURES:
17-18th March: Birkdale Bucket Northern Schools event at Woodhall Spa
With a team of just two, Joshua Wheeler and me, the Old Stoics look a shoe in for the Wooden Spoon again this weekend - assuming the snow does not get to Lincolnshire first. I'm sure the organisers can take more players if anyone fancies it - just contact me at pjgsimmons@gmail.com or 07957 141826

5-8 April: Halford Hewitt at St Georges & Deal
Stowe play Brighton at Deal at 3.20pm on Thursday 5th April
With a practice round at Deal in Feb, a good Hewitt team turn out at the Northern Meeting and practice rounds on both Tuesday and Wednesday before the Hewitt, Haydn Brooks and the team should be in good shape to take on Brighton College. The team is Haydn Brooks, Sean Morris, Rob Samuel, Charlie Gartside, Charlie Consett, Charlie Rotheroe, Peter Hale, Matt Bazeley, Peter Jarvis and one tbc. All support would be very welcome and if you want to join the team for dinner at the Lodge, Princes, on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday you would be very welcome. Just contact me at pjgsimmons@gmail.com

Match v Canford at Sunningdale, Sunday 29 April
Contact Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com if you would like to play in this match. As Cyril Gray Captain, Stewart would be particularly keen to hear from single figure handicap players who are over 50.

Boodles Dinner, Friday 4 May
This dinner is the ideal warm up for the Spring Meeting at Woking. Fabulous food and drink in the delightful setting of Boodles in St James, London. To book your place or get more details contact Angus Campbell ajmcampbell@gmail.com

Spring Meeting at Woking, Saturday 5 May
Contact our Captain, Nick Luddington, nicholasluddington@hotmail.co.uk if you want to play in our most popular meeting. Singles from 9.30am and foursomes from 2.30pm with an excellent lunch in between is a great combination.
The trophies now include the Nigel Stern Scratch Salver in honour of one of the Society's foremost members. Josh Wheeler will be defending the Foster Salver for the best stapleford score by an under 30 year old so lets ensure he has plenty of competition.
