OSGS June Update

8 June 2017

Golf1

Below is the latest update on what is going on in the OSGS. There are reports on two very successful matches in May and details on the Summer Meeting and other forthcoming fixtures - don't wait to be asked to play just contact the meeting or match manager.

Match v The Templars at Deal: 20 May
This hotly contested fixture ended 3-3. Unusually given the excesses of the Friday night the Templars had a 2-1 lead at lunchtime but fortunes were reversed in the afternoon. Josh Wheeler continued his good play from the Spring Meeting although the same could not be said of Charlie Saunders. Many thanks to Tom Sleater and David Ewbank for organising the day.

Match v The School at Stowe: 27 May
With the help of some Masters a 12 a side match took place reflecting the growing enthusiasm for golf at the School. Playing 4 ball better ball matches the OSGS surprisingly beat the School 4.5 to 1.5. There were three Father & Son line ups which added an extra edge to the contest. The course was in great condition despite a strong wind which made the picnic afterwards less comfortable.
Note:  Andrew Hancox told us that work on the new School Golf course will start in March 2018 with an estimated completion in Sept 2019. So the countdown to the closure of the current course starts.

Summer Meeting at Aldeburgh: 1 & 2 July
Attached are full details and an entry form for this great meeting superbly organised by Perry Hunt. There is also the option to play in a warm up match against the club on Friday afternoon (30th June). There is plenty for non golfers to do in and around Aldeburgh, a 50% green fee discount for under 30s and Perry and I will help with accommodation options.
Numbers are disappointing currently so please consider whether you are available to play. We compete for the Society's premier singles trophy, the Buchanan, on Saturday morning with two foursomes trophies on offer on Sunday morning.

Birkdale Bucket 60th Anniversary Event at Ilkley: 9 June
Your Captain, Nick Luddington, Northern Secretary, Charles Consett and Secretary are representing the OSGS in this Anniversary competition at Ilkley GC.
With 3 of the 40 golfers competing we are rather better represented than at the annual Woodhall Spa event!

Cyril Gray at Worplesdon: 22-24 June
Captain, Stewart McNair, has a strong team in David Julius, Martyn Palmer, Peter Jarvis (debutant), Tony Edgeley and Simon Chilton.
They play St Pauls at 9.40am on Thursday 22nd June and all support will be welcome.

Match v Old Gregorians at New Zealand: 2 Sept
William Waddell Dudley is Match Manager for this popular fixture. Email him on william.waddell-dudley@talbotuw.com if you would like to play

Match v The School at Stowe: 16 Sept
This is an extra match against the School arranged to help establish links with next year's team and will be part of the wider Stowe Sports Day. If you would like to play contact me at pjgsimmons@gmail.com

Autumn Meeting at Brancaster: 21/22 Oct
Get this date in your diary. Full details will be circulated in July
