OSGS June Newsletter

3 June 2019

Below are the results of our busy May programme and details of June to August fixtures.

The OSGS is for Old Stoic golfers, male and female, of all standards. We are keen for younger Old Stoics and Lady golfers to take part and U30 discounts apply at all fixtures.

Don't wait to be asked to play in any fixture just contact the Match/Meeting Manager or me.

Pass this email onto any other Old Stoic golfers who you think would be interested in taking part in our growing number of fixtures.

RESULTS:

4th May Spring Meeting at Woking

There were 21 attendees including debutants Jack Scott & Ollie Carr at an excellent Spring Meeting. Charlie Consett won the Scratch Salver (80), Paul McSweeney the Stableford Bowl (38), and Roddy Blackburne the U30 Salver with William Hill hitting the longest drive on the 6th and Adam Carling nearest the pin on the 16th. In the afternoon foursomes Nigel Wright and William Hill (29 over 14 holes) were clear winners with Charlie Consett & Angus Campbell and Andrew Clarke & Josh Wheeler runners up. Thanks to Nick Luddington for great organisation.

3rd May Boodles Dinner:

Well done to Angus Campbell for organising yet another superb dinner on the eve of the Spring Meeting.

11th May Match v Templars at Deal

Charlie Consett, Charles Dimpfl, John Da Silva, Nicholas Luddington, Paul McSweeney, Ian Bendell, Josh Wheeler, David Ewbank and Tom Sleater took part in some lively matches around the glorious Deal Links. I think the result was irrelevant and well done to David and Tom for organising.

12th May Match v Canford at Sunningdale

Despite a strong team of Stewart McNair, Peter Hale, Martyn Palmer, Greg Choyce, Sean Morris, Haydn Brooks, Paul Marshall, Tony Edgerley, Richard Wood, David Julius, Ben Dixey and Ian Bendell the Canford handicaps were too much to overcome on the day. Match Manager, Stewart McNair, is to start negotiations on a changed format!

19th May Grafton Morrish Qualifying at North Hants

Without its strongest team the OSGS failed to qualify yet again as the standard in this competition get better and better. Some younger low handicap new blood needed to bolster the team. If you want more information on what happened at North Hants and the other qualifying courses around the country then go to: http://www.graftonmorrish.org.uk/competitions.html and click on 2019 Qualifying.

25th May Match v The School at Stowe Anyone know where the Penfold Trophy is?

OSGS Captain, David Ewbank, led a team of 10 against a strong School side. The course was in perfect condition and the quality of the School team's short game won the day. The work of Andrew Hancox in developing golf at Stowe is very impressive and the OSGS is looking to support where it can.

Does anyone know where the Penfold Trophy has got to? This has been the main individual trophy for Stoics, competed for at a variety of courses over the decades and it has gone missing. If it can be located great, but if not the OSGS will fund a replacement so it can be competed for from 2020 onwards. We will also need to develop a full list of past winners!

6/7th July Summer Meeting at Aldeburgh - Room for more on Saturday and Sunday

This is a fantastic meeting organised by Perry Hunt. Singles on Saturday morning, Foursomes on Sunday morning and a match against the Club on Friday afternoon if you need a warm up. There are also plenty of local attractions for the non-golfers as well. As last year the Saturday Dinner will be at the beautifully refurbished Aldeburgh Golf Club and local non golfing Old Stoics are very welcome to attend - please spread the word.

Those attending part or all of the weekend include Ollie Carr, Perry Hunt, David Ewbank, Nick Luddington, Jeremey Scowsill, William Hill, Chris Hutber, Peter Simmons, Lorne Williamson, Miles Elliott, Mike Weston, Miles Hunt, Trevor Wilkinson and Don Jeffreys. Several others are possibles and Perry can accommodate more on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Perry's schedule/outline costs for the meeting and entry form are attached.
