OSGS January Newsletter

10 January 2018

Golf1

Happy New Year to you all and we hope you will be able to attend one of the increasing number of fixtures available in 2018.

Our Society is for players of all handicaps, male and female. If you have any queries about fixtures and which ones might be most relevant to you do not hesitate to contact me. Although I sent out the Fixture List before Christmas it is attached to this Update as well.
Remember all under 30s receive a 50% discount on the green fee costs.

Well done Charlie Rotheroe:
Congratulations to Charlie who won five matches before loosing in the semi final of the 2018 Presidents Putter at Rye last week. Charlie, who won the Putter in 96, 97 and 08, lost to the eventual winner, Claudio Consul, who also won in 2015 and has a few years on Charlie who reached Cyril Gray age last year. Other Old Stoic Putter winners include PB 'Laddie' Lucas and Mike Anderson.

Details of early season fixtures - Don't wait to be asked to play just contact the match or meeting manager

4 March: Match v The School at Sunningdale
A pre Micklem warm up for the School team and a further chance for the Halford Hewitt team to get some practice.
Haydn Brooks haydnbrooks@gmail.com will Captain the Old Stoic team so contact him if you want to play.

9-10 March: Northern Meeting & Old Stoic Dinner at Formby
An increasingly popular great value meeting with singles Stableford competitions on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning and accommodation in the Dormy House.
James Gartside jamesgartside@macdonaldandtaylor.com manages the meeting and is looking to surpass the 22 attendance of 2017 and already has a number of entries.
We are also working with the Old Stoic Society to invite non golfing Northern Old Stoics to the Friday night dinner at Formby Golf Club - so please pass on an invite to any non golfing Old Stoics you know in the area. This link will increase Old Stoic awareness of the OSGS and is likely to reduce the cost of the wine bill!

13 March: Match v The School at Woking
Practice match against the School team the day before the Micklem Trophy. Brunch from 11am with tee off from 12pm.

I am organising the team for this match pjgsimmons@gmail.com - Josh Wheeler and I are down to play so four more players needed.

17-18 March: Birkdale Bucket Northern Schools event at Woodhall Spa
The Chance of Stowe not winning the wooden spoon in 2018 has already improved as we have two probables and a possible for the team already - but with the best four scores to count the more the merrier. Please consider playing in this unique event on a great early season course for which the OSGS pay the green fees on Saturday and Sunday.
Full details of this event are attached together with an entry form. If you enter please inform me pjgsimmons@gmail.com

5-8 April: Halford Hewitt at St Georges & Deal
The draw took place last night and Stowe play Brighton at Deal at 3.20pm on 5 April. Team Captain, Haydn Brooks haydnbrooks@gmail.com is planning a February practice day for the team which has a good chance of progressing.
