OSGS Autumn Meeting

25 October 2015

Old Stoic Golfing Society Autumn Meeting 24/25th October 2015

14 Old Stoic golfers including four first time attendees played at the 2015 Autumn Meeting at Brancaster in Norfolk. The weather was mixed with two dry and one wet rounds and enough wind to make the course the challenge it should be.

On the Saturday morning a qualifying round of foursomes stableford was played to see who would compete for the Lucas Langley Salvers. Scoring was very close across all pairs but the most experienced pairs of Neil Gray and Nigel Wright and Chris and Nick Luddington just edged ahead to reach the final.

The singles competition was played on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon. A quality round of 77 from regular winner Neil Gray captured both the Secretaries Scratch Salver and the Piper Salver (best scratch score by an over 50). Julian Stocks was a deserved runner up in the scratch competition based on some excellent putting that ensured he won the Forgan St Andrews Putter for fewest putts on the green with a miserly 29. Hamish Edwards (Chandos 10), attending his first Meeting, was a deserved winner of the Nigel Chittenden Cup for best stableford score.

Saturday’s play was followed by the AGM of the Society. John Luddington stood down as President after three years of fantastic support for the Society and Lorne Williamson, a quality golfer over many decades, was elected as his replacement. To maintain the family’s presence in the Society Nick Luddington was elected Vice Captain while Stewart McNair was re-elected as Cyril Gray Captain.

On Saturday outgoing President, John Luddington, and Secretary, Peter Simmons, organised an excellent dinner for the players, wives and partners at Briarfields Hotel.

In the Sunday final of the Lucas Langley foursomes, Neil Gray was not able to continue his Saturday form and despite good play from Nigel Wright the Luddington brothers eased ahead to win 4&2 in beautiful calm and sunny conditions.

This is a fantastic meeting held at a great course. The Old Stoic Golfing Society would welcome more players to this and their other meeting in 2016. For more information contact Secretary, Peter Simmons, at p.j.g.simmons@herts.ac.uk
