OSGS April Newsletter

2 April 2020

Not surprisingly there is little golf to report - however the overall Old Stoic Society is highlighting a range of Old Stoic activities linked to the current challenge.

Most of you may have received an email from Old Stoic Director, Anna Semler asemler@stowe.co.uk yesterday but if you did not then visit the Old Stoic Society Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/OldStoicSociety/ which has full details.

BACK TO GOLF - below there is a report on the one match that has taken place since the last Update and what news there is on further fixtures for 2020.

Results:

- Tuesday 10th March - Match v The School and Micklem Trophy report

The School showed great form in edging the match on the Micklem Trophy practice day against a strong Old Stoic team of Alex Saary, James Nash, Guy Robinson, Greg Choyce & Pierse Odell. With their confidence high Stowe then beat Winchester and Charterhouse 3-2 to reach the final of the MIcklem. Unfortunately Stowe lost 3-2 to Wellington, the dominant team in the competition for the last decade, with the deciding match going to the 18th.

This is a young Stowe team with only two in the Six Form and we are confident they will get the Stowe name back on the Micklem Honours Board for the first time since 1991.

- Friday/Saturday 20/21st March - Northern Meeting at Formby:

Cancelled a couple of days before the meeting with a good turn out expected. Many thanks to James Gartside for all his efforts

- The Halford Hewitt - 2-5th April at Royal St Georges and Deal

Somewhat belatedly cancelled with talk of being re-scheduled for later in the year! Encouragingly the team was scheduled to include two recent leavers making their debut. The squad was: Haydn Brooks, Sean Morris, Peter Jarvis, Martyn Palmer, Guy Robinson, Matt Bazeley, Charlie Consett, Tony Edgerley, James Scott (2015 School Captain debut), Hugo Douglass (debut), Pierse Odell (2018 School Captain debut)

Fixtures: Subject to confirmation!

- The Spring Meeting - New date available - Saturday 22nd August

Meeting Manager, Nick Luddington nicholasluddington@hotmail.co.uk had sold out this popular meeting by early March.

The Club have offered an alternative date of Saturday 22nd August. Nick has emailed those who booked for the original 2nd May date, but assuming all those are not available in August contact Nick if you would like to play.

- Match v Canford - Sunday 10th May at Sunningdale:

Nothing heard from Sunningdale as yet but this fixture would seem unlikely to go ahead. Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com is the Match Manager.

- Match v Stowe Templars - Saturday 16th May at Deal:

Nothing heard from Deal as yet but this fixture would also seem unlikely.  Tom Sleater thomas.sleater@credit-suisse.com runs the Templars team and David Ewbank david.ewbank@btinternet.com Captains the OSGS team.

- Match v The School - Saturday 23rd May at Stowe:

There is still talk of the School re-opening at some stage in the Summer Term but that seems hopeful. This would have been our first match on the new course which was due to open today. I will keep everyone posted on this.

- Grafton Morrish Qualification round - Sunday 31st May at North Hants: All qualifying rounds have been postponed

I will be organising the team if qualifying is re-scheduled pjgsimmons@gmail.com  Maybe some news by the May Update

- Schools Putting Tournament - Monday 1st June at Royal Wimbledon:

Nothing heard from the Club but must be doubtful as social distancing even trickier given the fixture's format. Charles Dimpfl thedimpfls@gmail.com is team manager

- Midlands Public Schools Meeting - Wednesday 24th June at Little Aston:

No news as yet on this fixture. Contact me pjgsimmons@gmail.com if you would like to play - 8 needed for the Stowe team

- Cyril Gray - 25th - 27th June at Worplesdon:

No news as yet on this competition. Team Manager Stewart McNair md@mcnairpartnership.com was well advanced on team selection before the virus struck.

- Summer Meeting - 4/5th July at Aldeburgh:

President and Joint Meeting Manager, Perry Hunt perryhunt@keme.co.uk is not confident the course will reopen by July and he is in 12 weeks isolation.

I am sure that Perry would welcome hearing from anyone and together with the other Joint Meeting Manager, Ollie Carr ocarr@savills.com will keep us informed.

Looking further ahead with fingers crossed:

- Match v Old Gregorians - Sat 29th August at New Zealands:

Contact Match Manager, Ian Bendell ianbendell@hotmail.com if you would like to play in this 8-a-side match

- Match v The School - Sat 12th Sept at Stowe:

This could now be the first Old Stoic match on the new course and may be combined with the official opening of the course.

Contact me pjgsimmons@gmail.com if you want to register interest

- Autumn Meeting - 24/25th October at Hunstanton:

Even before the lock down I had entries from forward thinking Old Stoics Neil Gray, Ollie Carr, Matt Bazeley and David Ewbank.

Contact me if you want to play pjgsimmons@gmail.com

Forward Planning: Stowe Centenary 2022/23

One of the OSGS members, Julian Stocks, is leading on Old Stoic sporting events to celebrate the School's Centenary.

Suggestions made so far for OSGS involvement include:

- Golf event at Stowe linked to the regular March Old Stoic Sports Day. Maybe same format as the 'Farewell to the Old Course' last September

- Enlarged match against Canford and Wrekin who are also celebrating Centenaries

- Joint Stowe Golf team and Old Stoics golf tour

If anyone has any other suggestions or views then Julian Stocks julianstocks@hotmail.co.uk and I would welcome hearing from you
