OS Racing Club End of Season Lunch
12 May 2018
On Saturday 12 May, the Old Stoic Racing Club held their inaugural end of season lunch, to mark completion of their first racing season. Happily, the Club’s racehorse, Topper Thornton, was able to join in with the celebrations and was guest of honour!
Topper, who is trained by Alex Hales (Chandos 92), finished second on his first start at Carlisle and finished fifth in a £50,000 Handicap Chase at Sandown, at the beginning of December, providing the Club and the School with coverage on ITV4. He raced twice more but was pulled up both times having suffered various health problems towards the end of the season.
Twenty-two members of the Club attended the end of season lunch, which included a chance to visit Stowe’s Equestrian Centre as well as a group photo with Topper Thornton on the South Front.
Stowe’s wonderful catering team served a delicious lunch in the Blue Room, after which the Club Manager, Henry Kimbell (Chandos 04) gave thanks to the Club Members for their support throughout the year, as well as to Alex Hales (Chandos 92) for all of his efforts with Topper. Henry and Alex were presented with gifts from the Old Stoic Society for their hard work establishing the Old Stoic Racing Club.
After lunch, some of our guests made the most of the weather and enjoyed a stroll in the gardens before heading home. A very successful and enjoyable lunch, made even more special by Topper’s visit.
We are hoping to continue with Topper for another season to give him a chance to find his form. If you would like to join the Old Stoic Racing Club, please email oldstoic@stowe.co.uk for full information about the options available to you. All Old Stoics, Parents and Friends of Stowe are warmly invited to be part of this Club.
