Exploring Legal Careers: Stoics Connect with Experts at Inner Temple

On February 27, 2025, six Stoics had an incredible opportunity to attend an Old Stoic Law Networking Event at the Inner Temple in London, hosted by Lord Murray of Blidworth (Grenville, 1993). The event provided insight into the diverse careers within the legal profession, allowing attendees to engage in discussions and deepen their understanding of the complexities of law.

The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr Susie Alegre (Nugent 89), an international human rights lawyer and author. She shared her wealth of experience in the legal field, spanning over 20 years, during which she has worked on some of the most pressing legal and political challenges of our time. Her expertise lies at the intersection of technology, artificial intelligence, and human rights, and she has been actively involved in cases related to security, corruption, human rights at borders, and the impact of climate change on small islands.

Dr Alegre’s first book, Freedom to Think (Atlantic Books, 2022), was named a Financial Times Technology Book of the Year 2022 and was shortlisted for the Royal Society of Literature Christopher Bland Prize 2023. She also spoke about her book, Human Rights, Robot Wrongs: Being Human in the Age of AI, which explores the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights.

Her career has taken her across the globe, working in locations as diverse as Spain, Uganda, Brussels, Kyrgyzstan, and Poland. She has collaborated with international NGOs like Amnesty International and major organisations such as the United Nations, the European Union, and the Council of Europe, offering valuable insight into how international law and institutions operate in practice. Originally from the Isle of Man, she is also the founder of the Island Rights Initiative, advocating for the human rights of island communities.

The evening was an exceptional opportunity for Stoics to broaden their knowledge of legal pathways and gain practical guidance for those considering a career in law. Thank you to the Old Stoics who attended the evening. We are especially grateful to Dr Alegre, James Mahon (Grafton 95), and Mark Bowman (Cobham 98) for offering to participate in Concord and Victory interviews, equipping Stoics with essential advice on crafting competitive university applications for law.

A huge thank you to everyone who organised this event, particularly Charlie Evans and Anna Semler from the Old Stoic Society. We would also like to express our gratitude to Dr Gordon West for his continued support in providing Stoics with such enriching opportunities. This event was truly inspiring, and we look forward to building on the knowledge and connections gained.
