Fine Cell Charity Event
14 March 2016
On the evening of Friday 11 March, Izzy Oliver (Upper Sixth, Queen’s) hosted a charity event for Queen’s with the help of Dot Holt (Upper Sixth, Queen’s) and Saskia Satchell (Upper Sixth, Queen’s). The Charity, Fine Cell Work, trains prisoners in the skills needed to make beautiful and creative works of tapestry.
For many of these men, it is the first time in their lives that they have actually been paid for something they have created. The training and friendship of working in groups helps to raise their self-esteem as well as give them meaningful employment while under ‘lock down’. The skills they learn can then be carried into their new lives when they leave prison.
The event was well supported and gave an insight into conditions in prison. There was a talk about how the charity was founded, a cash bar, and the tapestries were available to buy and there was a raffle. On the night Izzy, Dot and Saskia raised approximately £5,000 for the charity.
This amazing total just goes to show that using this year’s School theme of ‘Passion, Potential and Perseverance’ we can really help to make a difference in people’s lives.
