Birkdale Bucket Champions

7 September 2021

A busy Autumn for the Old Stoic Golfing Society got off to a great start with Stowe winning the Birkdale Bucket for the first time since the competition started in 1957. Great stableford scores from Nick Rice (Lyttelton 71) (35), David Sabberton (Temple 62) (32) and Nick Luddington (Chatham 78) (30), with support from Stephen Murray (Cobham 61) and Peter Simmons (Cobham 69), clinched the unique trophy at the challenging Moortown course near Leeds. Oundle were the runners up. Nick Rice also won the Burrow's Tobacco Jar for the best over 65 score.

The Birkdale Bucket is a competition for 'Northern' schools involving Giggleswick, Oundle, Pocklington, Sedbergh, Uppingham, Worksop and Wrekin in addition to Stowe. Hopefully Stowe's success will encourage more Old Stoic golfers to take part in 2022 when the Birkdale Bucket returns to its traditional venue of Woodhall Spa on 5-6 March.

The win is dedicated to the late David Hadfield (Walpole 63) who represented Stowe at 22 Birkdale Buckets from 1973 through to 2010, many times on his own.
