The Jeremy Nichols Bursary

Former Headmaster (1989 - 2003)

Jeremy Nichols sadly died in August 2020. We were delighted to celebrate his life with his family and many of you at Stowe School Chapel in September 2021.

After many donated generously to a retiring collection at the memorial the family thought long and hard about what they inteded to do with the money and decided the following:

"We would dearly love to honour Dad’s name and what he stood for, through a significant educational bursary.  We want to fuel the ambition and fire he so loved to inspire through awarding a bursary to the most outstanding and deserving students: those who would benefit most from recognition and support."

So, we have created a ‘Jeremy Nichols Bursary’ to support children from less-advantaged backgrounds who would thrive from an independent education.

Jeremy's family went on to say:

"There is still so much potential to unlock and given his generous nature it seems fitting to establish a generous bursary at Stowe, where he was Headmaster. Our hope, with Stowe’s help and in line with their Change 100 mission, is to raise £1million to establish a fund that provides substantial support for deserving children for many years to come.  We realise this is a lofty ambition, but it will exemplify our father’s belief that education was the greatest gift of all. “Think big” as he used to say!

We believe this is the most fitting recognition of the mentor, friend, colleague, teacher and headmaster we all knew and loved. We hope it will also allow you to play a part in ensuring his legacy of inclusivity, love of the underdog, or ‘forgotten middle’ as Roly Fisher (an ex-tutee of Dad’s) so eloquently put it in the service, lives on in an enduring and permanent way.

Stowe’s promise to “do the best by every child” rings true in the establishment of such an educational award. So, please, if you can, at whatever level is possible for you – "Carpe Diem” in his name and help create something wonderful!"
