Life before Stowe
I was at South Shields Grammar School followed by Manchester University, the Royal Navy and then teaching at Hillcrest, Nairobi for five years.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
Organisms more than cells and molecules; so ecology, evolution and genetics.
What do you enjoy most about Stowe?
The location, working with committed professionals in biology, the Fourth Form, the list goes on! The great majority of Stoics have a really healthy attitude to exams and academia; important, but not that important.
What is your favourite Lesson?
Any 'practical' really - the Stoics tend to be engaged and enjoy discovering things for themselves. Biology is pretty visual so I like using images and animations. I like the lab to be reasonably relaxed and I don’t like to get too serious about my subject.
My favourite hat is Master in Charge of fishing; it allows me to buy trout and wear rubber stuff. I also enjoy squash, footy, tennis and organising expeditions to wild places like Honduras and Mozambique.
Guitarist for world-conquering band ‘Plug Street’; we’ve played the Woolpack and Thornborough Village Hall, you know! Windsurfing, bird ringing/ornithology, skiing, camping in the Hebrides with my family.
