Life before Stowe

From Sherborne School, I went to Durham and then Cambridge University for my PGCE. I then taught at Cheltenham College for six years, fifteen years at Cranleigh, before serving as Headmaster at St Andrew's Senior School, Turi, in Kenya for two years.

What do you enjoy most about your subject?

Maths is an extremely satisfying subject to teach; there is seldom any interpretation necessary because solutions are usually clearly right or wrong. Seeing pupils grasp a concept which they can apply successfully is a pleasure. Algebra is brilliant: its logic, simplicity and applicability never fails to amaze me.

What do you enjoy most about Stowe?

Working with the people at Stowe – support staff, teaching staff, the pupils and parents make the place remarkable.

What do others say about you?

19 years as a Housemaster has certainly given me a breadth of experience.  My teaching style is relaxed, purposeful and effective – results have always been good – and I have up until recently had strong Golf teams.

Other hats
