Life before Stowe
After completing an engineering apprenticeship in Blackburn I graduated in Natural Sciences from Durham University and from Cambridge University as a post graduate. My first teaching post was at Charterhouse where I fulfilled the roles of Head of Geography, Senior Boarding House Tutor and Master in Charge of Cricket. After 12 years in Surrey we moved to Edinburgh where I was Director of the Co-Curricular at Merchiston Castle School.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
The contemporary and diverse nature of the subject matter such as the challenges of Climate Change and the Geography of Superpowers, as well as the fun and active learning environment that fieldwork provides.
What do you enjoy most about Stowe?
The profound sense of community, the friendship amongst the pupils and staff and my daily journeys from Chandos through the beauty of the Mansion House and across the South Front.
What is your favourite lesson?
Using chocolate bars to teach the properties of rocks in geology, namely Aero, Toffee Crisp and Fruit & Nut bars.
What do others say about you?
I think the pupils would say that I am firm but fair and that I expect them to be positive and to give their very best, whether in the classroom or beyond. Others may comment on my calmness, sense of humour and 'mildly' competitive nature.
I am Housemaster of Chandos and coach the U14A cricket team. I enjoy visiting prep schools whether to take an assembly, referee a football match or visit teaching friends.
Some friends call me a little sport mad and true to form I will lend my hand to most ball sports. Nowadays that tends to be mainly on the cricket field, playing for the MCC or Free Foresters, or on the links courses of East Lothian when I am not chasing after or entertaining my three young children. I also enjoy skiing, art and cooking for my wife and our friends on the rare occasion I find the time.
