Life before Stowe
I spent seven very happy school years at Lancaster Royal Grammar School before embarking on a ‘Chemistry for Drug Discovery’ degree at the University of Bath. During this time I was awarded a prize for academic excellence and I completed my MChem research project in the Prof. J.M.J. Williams research group. My research has since been published.
I have worked for GlaxoSmithKline as a medicinal chemist where I designed and synthesised small molecules to inhibit a range of epigenetic targets. I then undertook a PGCE at the University of Manchester as part of the Teach First Leadership Development Program and spent two years teaching in East Manchester.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
Organic Chemistry is certainly my favourite area of the subject. I love the problem solving involved in deciding on a synthesis route to an organic molecule and then the practical aspect of being able to go into the lab and make it!
What do you enjoy most about Stowe?
Stowe is fantastic due to the surroundings, staff and Stoics. The House and grounds are an incredible place to live, work and be educated; the Common Room is friendly and experienced; the Stoics are enthusiastic, inquisitive and keep you on your toes! The variety involved in each day makes long days seem short and everybody has the opportunity to try their hand at something new.
What is your favourite Lesson?
I enjoy getting into the lab to allow pupils to learn through their observations. The fractional distillation of crude oil practical is great because it allows an industrial scale process to be replicated in the lab. This really helps with a pupils’s understanding of the theory.
What do others say about you?
Hopefully that I am a down to earth Northerner who has a deep passion for my subject!
I co-coach the Rugby Senior 3rd XV and my first season was with the already legendary team of 2015 who had an unbeaten season of 10 matches. In the Lent term I am involved with the Yearlings’ Rugby.
As Cobham Under Housemaster I spend the remaining time of a week catching up with Cobham Third Form as their Tutor and on evening duties around the House!
