Life before Stowe
I was HoD of Geography at Akeley Wood School, a co-ed independent day school, for many years before joining my husband at Stowe in 2008.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
I love Geography because it is such a dynamic subject, practically every day something happens in the world which is relevant to the curriculum. The subject never stands still; there is always something new to learn and modern technology allows us to bring the world into the classroom in a way that we couldn’t have done ten years ago. Stowe provides me with all the technology and materials I need to bring Geography into the 21st Century. I have enjoyed some success as an author of Geography textbooks, my latest offering was published in April 2009, and is a core textbook to support the AQA Geography Advanced Level Specification. I am also a Senior A Level examiner for AQA, where in addition to marking exam papers my responsibilities as Principal Examiner have included question paper setting and advising teachers and Geography Departments across the UK. I was thrilled to be invited to be a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 2012.
What is your favourite Lesson?
I enjoy interactive lessons and am always endeavouring to come up with new ways to make the subject interesting to Stoics. I particularly enjoy creating webpages and the introduction of the VLE has allowed me to create lots of new teaching resources. At University I specialised in Urban Geography and Development issues and still particularly enjoy the teaching of these topics, but I have equally enjoyed teaching Physical Geography both inside and outside of the classroom.
I am Head of Careers and I thoroughly enjoy helping Stoics plan the next stage of their lives. I shoulder responsibility for 50% of our University applications and I also assist with the organisation of Work Experience.
I enjoy good food, walking my dog, Frank, and spending time with my family. I have always enjoyed being active and am a keen (although some say obsessed) CrossFitter, competing at Masters level where I have enjoyed some success. I used to sing semi-professionally with a ‘big band’ but gave this up when work commitments became too heavy.
