After gaining a degree in mathematics at Cambridge, Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent spent 37 years in the Royal Navy, his final appointment being as Commander-in-Chief Fleet. In the Cold War he commanded the conventional submarine HMS OLYMPUS and the nuclear submarine HMS CONQUEROR. During the Bosnia crisis he commanded a Squadron of 4 frigates, led by HMS BRILLIANT, and then the aircraft carrier HMS INVINCIBLE carrying 16 Harriers for operations in Iraq and Kosovo. On 9/11 he was commanding a large Navy and Royal Marine Task Group in the Middle East, which he reconfigured to eject the Taliban Government from Afghanistan. He also served several times in Whitehall, including in HM Treasury. He now runs his own strategic advisory business, Orchard Leadership.
