After taking an honours degree in History Mrs Phillips joined Unilever in the Market Research department. After marrying, she went abroad for 17 years when her teaching career began. On returning to England Mrs Philips was appointed Deputy Head at Feltham Community School and subsequently moved to The St Marylebone CE School as Headmistress. The school was awarded specialist school status in 1998 and became the leading Performing Arts College in the SSAT. The subsequently added Maths and Computing as the second specialism and as a High Performing Secondary School SEN Communication as the third. From a failing school with only 26% 5 A-C St Marylebone become the most improved school in 2007 as the percentage of *A-C GCSE grades rose to over 90% where it has remained for the last ten years with 90+% including English and Maths for the last two years. The school focused on outstanding teaching which is seen as the foundation of the school’s success. The School was named by the Mayor of London as first in its group of 56 similar schools and a member of the Mayor’s Gold Club.
St Marylebone is now one of the outstanding academies, one of the original 100 teaching schools and has opened a free special school meeting the needs of pupils with speech language and communication needs. Mrs Phillips, who is a National Leader of Education, was appointed Executive Head teacher of the St Marylebone Academies Trust in 2010 and was Chair of the Westminster Secondary Heads Forum, representing Secondary Head teachers on the 14-19 Executive Board.
Retiring from her Headship at the end of 2013, Mrs Phillips is now involved with various projects made possible by the new educational scene. She wrote two successful education bids for free schools: one a free special school attached to St Marylebone and one for a boys’ school in Marylebone which opened in September 2014. The other successful bid was to set up the Sir Simon Milton UTC in Westminster working with the Employers alliance led by Network Rail. Mrs Phillips is Chair the Governing Body of the UTC.
