Life before Stowe

Before I came in to teaching, I had lived all over the country due to my husband’s rugby career. Since qualifying at the University of Buckingham I have taught English and Speech and Drama at Swanbourne House School, Ousedale School and Bedford School.

What do you enjoy most about your subject?

I enjoy linking context to literature. It is gratifying to encourage pupils to think about the social and political climate of the time the book, play or poem was written and how that may have affected the writer’s language and feelings.

What do you enjoy most about Stowe?

Aside from getting the pleasure of working in Arcadia, I enjoy the mixture of tradition and innovation as it results in a little bit of magic every day.

What is your favourite Lesson?

I enjoy teaching plays in particular due to my drama background. Without giving away spoilers, I always cry at the end of 'Of Mice and Men' because it’s such an impactful moment.

What do others say about you?

It depends on who you ask. My sons would probably say I can find any lost item (through the magic of actually searching) and that I make great nachos; I’m quite pleased with that review.

Other hats

I am involved in the drama department with the Arts Award, so I get to flex my theatrical muscles. I assist pupils with Concord and Victory. Additionally, I am a Sixth Form Tutor in Stanhope.
