Life before Stowe
I have been a teacher for about 30 years, teaching economics in a variety of schools. I attempted to retire in December 2015 but soon discovered that I missed working and missed teaching and therefore returned to what I believe is my vocation.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
In the main, Economics is a new subject for pupils at A Level. It is enjoyable to start teaching a subject from scratch and see pupils rapidly develop an understanding of a subject which impacts on our daily life.
What do you enjoy most about Stowe?
It is especially good to work in a department with other economics teachers. In the main I have taught in schools where I have been the only economics teacher which is quite lonely. At Stowe there are four other teachers which allows plenty of opportunities to bounce ideas around and share resources.
What is your favourite Lesson?
I enjoy teaching pupils about what constitutes money in an economy. It is something we use every day yet remarkably few people understand where it comes from and how the monetary system developed and works in a modern economy.
What do others say about you?
I know pupils think I mark their work harshly. A previous pupil of mine commented that he could copy out the mark scheme and I still wouldn’t give him full marks. It didn’t do him any harm, he got an A*.
I have had a lot of other roles and responsibilities in schools during my career and while these were rewarding in their own ways I am now happy to concentrate on the core role as a teacher of economics.
I passionately believe that education is key in giving young people opportunities and choices, a good education can be life changing I believe everybody should have the opportunity of a good education and nobody should squander or waste that opportunity.
