Life before Stowe
Many and varied! On leaving school I completed a four year engineering apprenticeship with the Royal Signals before serving with them for a further three years as a Research and Development engineer. At the conclusion of my service I read Industrial Design with Education at Loughborough University, from which I moved into teaching. Whilst assistant head of Design & Technology and assistant Director of Rugby at Whitgift School I started coaching part time with London Wasps Academy. In 2006 Wasps asked me to go full time with them. In the middle of my 11 years with them I spent a few seasons coaching the first team forwards and was lucky enough to be involved with winning a European Cup and a Premiership as well as more importantly helping some great young players achieve their aspirations, formed some great friendships and shared some truly great experiences. Through my association with the Penguins RFC I spent a summer off season coaching the Chinese national team in preparation for the Asian Six Nations tournament which was a fabulous experience of a very different culture. My sojourn in professional rugby was only ever intended to be for a couple of years, it was considerably longer and thoroughly enjoyable, however, I am now extremely happy to be back amongst a school community again, teaching a subject I love and particularly to be here at Stowe.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
I enjoy every aspect of Design Technology. In one moment you can be debating the beauty of a products aesthetics and then a moment later be talking about its heavily industrialised mass manufacture and profit margin. Similarly the synthesis of the subject can lead students to use sustainable materials helping the planet, making products that can truly help enrich people’s lives and at the very same time they are seeking that magical design that may end up making them their fortune!
What do you enjoy most about Stowe?
The balance here. The environment allows this community to pursue what makes them succeed and makes them happy. There is an ethos of ensuring both “happiness” and “achievement” are being pursued in a complimentary manner.
What is your favourite Lesson?
Any lesson or session where you see the “light bulb go on” and see a smile follow.
What do others say about you?
Difficult question, so I asked a few old friends and these were their (heavily edited) responses: As enthusiastic as a puppy, as inquisitive as Sherlock, OCD, stubborn as a mule, as blunt as a brick and as mischievous as always.
Fourth Form Tutor in Bruce. Rugby and cricket coach.
I think I have a passion for life; I firmly believe that life is what you make it – specifically passionate about my wife, friends, helping young people meet their aspirations, good design, sport, politics, architecture, sculpture, fishing, etc. However, my wife may dispute the order of these at times...
