Life before Stowe
I've been teaching piano continuously since I was 13. I was Director of Music at St Peter and St Paul's, Olney, before holding the Organ Scholarship and reading Music at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. I spent four years at Cambridge as an Organ and Choral Scholar, and was simultaneously the Assistant Director of Music at St Mary the Less, and the Composer, Orchestrator and Musical Director for the world-renowned Cambridge Footlights. In my fourth year I helped to establish the Cambridge Singing School for young aspiring singers, before moving back to Buckinghamshire. I've been at Stowe since 2015.
What do you enjoy most about your subject?
The difference it makes to all who encounter it; its ability to transcend boundaries, quash expectations and challenge norms. Its capability of portraying that which cannot be put into words, and its power to unite. The breadth that allows you to inspire all who come across it, and the fact that it can simultaneously be my profession, hobby and passion, and still keep me inspired.
What do you enjoy most about Stowe?
The Stoics, staff and atmosphere, and the variety each day.
What is your favourite Lesson?
A cliché, but every lesson. I get bored very easily, so I try to make every lesson something that I'll remain interested in and remember. If it keeps me interested, then I like to think it keeps my pupils interested.
What do others say about you?
Mad, unpredictable, never far from a cup of coffee, and “who's that Sixth Former?”
I have a bobble hat but don't wear it that very often. I also have a blue hat!
Chapel Organist, accompanist, and Musical Director for the past three musical productions at Stowe: Prodigy (2016), Beauty and the Beast (2016) and Company (2015). I'm also an A Level examiner with Edexcel, and wrote parts of the new GCSE Music textbook. Outside of Stowe, I am a Musical Director for the National Youth Music Theatre, and accompanist to Milton Keynes Chorale.
Life, music, teaching and sarcasm.
