There are numerous opportunities for academic extension across the School. In addition to a wide range of academic societies, the Open Scholars' programme runs throughout the year for Third to Fifth Form pupils. This is open to any who wish to attend. The programme includes a series of seminars and also access to lectures and events designed to challenge pupils’ thinking and help them explore beyond the confines of the curriculum. In addition, the invitation-only Lower School Academic Scholars' (LSAS) groups meet weekly to engage in discussions, academic competitions, challenges and trips.
In the Sixth Form departments offer subject societies that host discussions and invite top specialists in their fields to give talks and seminars. Those in the Sixth Form applying for the most competitive courses at university (Oxbridge, Medicine/Veterinary Science, Ivy League) can also participate in the Headmaster’s Essay Society, which meets weekly to give and discuss papers and to provide support and guidance in applications. There are also very popular and hotly contested Debating competitions in both the Lower School and Sixth Form and the school runs very successful Model United Nations and Robotics Societies.
