Purpose of the Job

We are looking for a friendly, professional Maintenance Technician to join our busy team of maintenance staff at Stowe School. The role will be to assist the Head of Estates and the Building Management team with undertaking general building maintenance tasks in and around the school and any other properties that the school may have at their disposal, to ensure that upkeep and statutory compliance are maintained.

You will enjoy working in a busy and varied role, delivering a first class and responsive service to the school wherever possible. The role will include carpentry and general building works, as well as support to the General Foreman and Buildings Maintenance Supervision. You will be interacting with the wider school community so a good personal approach and proactive nature are important. You will have previous experience in the maintenance/estates industry or relevant trade skills.

The Role

  • To assist the Head of Estates and the Building Management team with undertaking general building maintenance tasks in and around the school and any other properties that the school may have at their disposal, to ensure that upkeep and statutory compliance are maintained.
  • To deliver a first class and responsive service to the school wherever possible.
  • The needs of the school will require a flexible approach to work delivery, and a positive response to needs as they arise.
  • The role will include carpentry and general building works, as well as support to the General Foreman and Buildings Maintenance Supervisor
  • The role may also include driving the school maintenance vans as and when required.
  • Indirect and direct interaction with the school community is likely and thus a good personal approach and proactive nature are important.
  • The role requires a good team player, and a willingness to support other team members if requested.

Key Tasks:

  • To be capable of carrying out repairs and maintenance to a variety of buildings, their facilities and infrastructure including – basic plumbing, joinery, touch up painting, patch plastering, and general repairs.
  • To note the repairs identified on the works portal daily, and in conjunction with the General Foreman prioritise workload and action.
  • To undertake risk assessments and assess the asbestos management plans prior to commencing any works.
  • To carry out all work in a professional manner, and fully in accordance with the appropriate standards and legislation.
  • To carry out all work in a safe manner and to always maintain a clean and tidy working environment.
  • To follow all health and safety instructions for work activities and for using plant and equipment, report any health and safety concerns or faulty plant or equipment immediately to the Buildings Maintenance Supervisor / General Foreman.
  • To undertake fire door assessments (for which additional training can be provided) and carry out remedial and replacement works as required.
  • Keep to the fire door audit programme and update records.
  • Monitoring the standards of the premises and furnishings and report any problems or faults to the Buildings Maintenance Supervisor / General Foreman.
  • Assist in carrying out building compliance throughout the premises.
  • Oversee the operation of equipment used in performing maintenance work.
  • Assisting the Buildings Maintenance Supervisor and General Foreman in ensuring that the legal provisions relating to Health and Safety at work are properly adhered to, including the safe storage of any flammable/toxic substances on site (excluding workshops/laboratories)
  • Carry out school based procedures in the event of fire, flood, breaking and entering, accident or major damage
  • Liaise with maintenance and product suppliers as requested.
  • To be aware of, and comply with, the policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, health and safety and security.
  • Participate in the appraisal process and undertake all identified training.
  • Undertake any other work as reasonably requested by the Head, Head of Estates, Buildings Maintenance Supervisor or General Foreman.

  • An understanding of General Maintenance
  • Fire door repairs / replacement.
  • Must also be able to work without supervision and prioritise workload according to fixture lists and weather conditions
