Assistant House Custodian

Contract type: Permanent 

Hours of work: 22.5 hours a week, ideally Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 52 weeks per year

Salary: Up to £15,000 (up to £25,000 pro rata), pro rata annual leave & pension contribution.

Anticipated start date: March 2024

Assistant House Custodian 

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as Assistant House Custodian at Stowe, as part of the Stowe House Preservation Trust. You will support our House Custodian across a wide range of responsibilities. Working preferably Tuesday to Thursday, you will be involved in all aspects of the ongoing conservation and upkeep of Stowe House, working closely with the SHPT team, the School, and external contractors and stakeholders, to ensure that Stowe House continues to develop and thrive.    

We are looking for an enthusiastic, proactive person, who has excellent admin and organisational skills. If you have a experience and a passion for working within a heritage site then we would love to hear from you. 

This is a unique opportunity to become part of Stowe’s 300-year history and help us to share Stowe with our wide range of audiences.

Specialist Skills & Experience

  • Experience in the heritage sector  

  • Experience of working with databases 

  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office packages 

  • Good written communication skills 

  • Excellent general ICT skills  

  • Excellent telephone manner 

  • Understanding of Museum Acceditation and Spectrum standards 

  • Experience of undertaking basic cleaning of collections and historic interiors 

  • Experience of working in a small team and with volunteers  

  • Experience of working with committees, volunteers or charitable organisations 

Personal Qualities

  • Ability to work independently or within a team  

  • Well organised and the ability to adapt 

  • Continued professional development and a willingness to undertake sector and role specific training 

  • An interest in history, architecture, research and archives
